The Socialist Party, through the voice of Johanna Rolland, the mayor of Nantes, calls for a symbolic march in the streets of the seaside resort of Loire-Atlantique in support of Mayor Yannick Morez.

The Socialist Party is calling for a symbolic march on May 24 in Saint-Brévin-les-Pins, in support of Mayor Yannick Morez, who resigned after threats related to a project to transfer a reception center for asylum seekers, announced Thursday the first deputy secretary of the PS, Johanna Rolland.

"We call for a big march, a big rally, in Saint-Brévin, on May 24, in the afternoon," said the mayor of Nantes, on BFMTV. "When what happened in Saint-Brévin, it is the whole Republic that retreats," she said, inviting "all elected officials attached to the values of the Republic, activists, sympathizers, all humanists who refuse to give in to the intimidation of the National Rally", to be "numerous" that day.

A "wake-up" signal

The appeal of the elected Nantes is launched jointly with the first secretary of the PS, Olivier Faure, and the first deputy vice-president of the Association of Mayors of France, André Laignel, she said. In a statement, all three stressed that the resignation of the mayor "is an alarm for all Republicans".

"No one should accept that a mayor who fulfills his duty of fraternity by hosting a place of accommodation for asylum seekers, can be intimidated and suffer the fire of his own house," they say, regretting that the State, "after being alerted, did not react by leaving this elected alone in the face of the threat of the extreme right."

'The venom of racism'

Deploring that "the trivialization of the parliamentary far right has freed throughout the territory, the speech and now the action of individuals or groups who feel legitimate to spread the venom of racism", they write that they do not want to "let pass" this situation.

Saluting a mayor who "has been the honor of the Republic", Johanna Rolland said that "never should an elected official be forced to choose between protecting his family and exercising his public mandate".
