The Friends of the Villa Rustica in Peiting recently met for its annual meeting. Among other things, the goal has been set to digitize the excavation site.

Peiting – Life in the Villa Rustica has picked up speed again after the Corona-related break: 95 visitors recently walked in the footsteps of the Romans during 1262 guided tours alone. In addition, Werner Schmitt supervised four school classes from the Werdenfels-Gymnasium Garmisch-Partenkirchen as well as the Gymnasium Weilheim and the Mittelschule Peiting with their technical work.

The children were thrilled by the games, the "bookmarks" workshop and the treasure hunt during the holiday program, as board member Jürgen Schreiber reported. They also had a lot of fun with the "legionnaire training" under "Optios Titus", as the pictures by Doris Friedl shown in the meeting showed. "Wolfgang Maurus and his wife are always an enrichment in their historical Roman costumes," said Schreiber and Mayor Peter Ostenrieder.

Villa Rustica in Peiting: Ten married couples tied the knot here in 2022

At the Villa Rustica in front of the unique backdrop with the fantastic view of the Hohenpeißenberg, ten married couples said "I do" last year. One couple even came from Austria to the market town.

The head of the town hall, Ostenrieder, thanked the association for creating this gem. "It's a valuable place that we have here in Peiting." All the guests with whom he comes there – as recently with his colleagues from the town hall in Anzing – are enthusiastic. "When Jakob Leicher talks about life in the villa, you always get the impression that he lived in it himself," Ostenrieder said.

The Peitinger love spell, which is one of the 100 local treasures, has once again found its way into literature: According to Schreiber, a translation of it recently appeared in the paper "Bavarian Archaeology Issue 1/2022 - Eroticism in Prehistory and Early History". Sabine Mayer also reports in detail on the Peitinger Anlage in a five-page article in the "Denkmalinformation Bayern Nr. 178/2022". And finally, it was also included in the "bergfex hiking guide Tour 18 - Along the Lech between Schongau and Peiting: Romans, Guelphs, Hohenstaufen and Wittelsbachs". With the opening of the "Windows into the Past" on April 30 last year, the "Villa Rustica" project has reached its provisional conclusion.

Förderverein wants to digitize plant and is looking for young talent

During a visit to the "Federal Institute for Real Estate Affairs", which left the property to the market town, there was great praise for the historical commitment. As a long-term goal, the association has now set its sights on the digitization of the plant.

At the annual general meeting, board member Jürgen Schreiber was pleased to note that the 260-year-old tuff column, which was broken in a rear-end collision, has now been replaced by a copy of a Tusk column made of travertine. This type of Roman column was mainly used in rural areas.

Schreiber expressed special thanks to the hard-working volunteers who have worked 920 hours to ensure the clean appearance of the facility and especially the herb garden. Sven Eckert has also contributed as a "new force". "It would be nice if more younger friends of the Villa Rustica could get involved in guided tours and care in the future," says Schreiber. Because: "After all, we are all getting older," as Jakob Leicher and Werner Schmitt stated.

Förderverein Villa Rustica is financially well positioned

Last year, four members had to be accompanied on their last journey: Hans Fleischmann, as secretary from 1992 to 1996, played a key role in the consolidation phase that was so important for the association. Without Peter Asanger, many things would not have been possible during the construction of the shelter. Likewise, with Hans Schütz and Ludwig Dufter, competent teachers were lost.

Currently, the association has 152 members. Financially, the association is well positioned, as Nicola Schreiber's cash report showed. Particularly pleasing was the donation of 1000 euros from the Cultural Foundation of the Kreissparkasse Schongau as well as further donations and higher contributions of 4295 euros.
