A glass artist from Houilles has won four prizes at the request of the organisers of the European singing competition.

She did Eurovision, in a way. In his workshop on rue de l'Église, in Houilles (Yvelines), Bertille Hurard made four trophies at the request, at the end of February, of the organizers of the great European singing competition, whose final will be held Saturday evening in Liverpool (England). A work on glass that the artist imagined, drew and designed by hand.

These 20-centimetre trophies take the form of a microphone. Prizes that will be awarded internally. No chance of seeing it in the hands of La Zarra if it offers the France its first victory in forty-six years. "At first, I thought it was the trophy of the final," laughs Bertille Hurard. But in view of the budget and the size requested, I understood that no! »

She wanted to "do this with her own technique and dough"

Undeterred, Bertille, in his sixties, decided to embark on this project under a few conditions. She asks for a delay of three weeks and reworks the visual to "do this with her technique and her own dough".

First stage of manufacture: the sketch. The artist traces the contours of the trophies on tracing paper. His technique requires building them like puzzles, composed of spare parts. Sixty pieces of glass are cut one by one for this order.

Then comes the decisive step of cooking, which makes it possible to assemble the different parts. "Glass is like chocolate, you have to melt it so that it mixes well," explains Bertille Hurard. Once the pieces are cooked at more than 800 ° C, it remains to glue the different blocks with a UV lamp. The artist can finally move on to the finishes. The logo of the show is engraved by an external speaker.

"I did not measure the magnitude of the event"

Making these pieces for Eurovision was not without difficulties. The technique of firing glass "is not suitable for working at height". But for Bertille, it's a challenge. She admits, however, that she did not "measure the magnitude of the event". Without being a regular at Eurovision, Bertille Hurard has watched the show several times. However, she announces that "this year, she will watch it in full!"

The artist has been based in Houilles since 2004, after a first shop in Eure-et-Loir two years earlier. "Art has always followed me closely and one day it caught up with me," says the former employee in the pharmaceutical industry. For her, who likes to "work with light and colors, glass was obvious". In her studio, she made pieces ranging from small jewels to stained glass windows, such as those of the church of Sartrouville.
