Site preservation and job security: Employees of the Schongau hospital make demands

2023-05-13T14:17:12.298Z

Highlights: Employees of the Schongau hospital have gathered in front of the building. Together with Verdi, they demand, among other things, the preservation of the location. "We are a hospital. No long-term or short-term care," says one doctor. "Everyone wants to keep their jobs and provide for people," says another. "It is important that it continues," says Deputy Chairwoman of the Works Council, Tanja Tanotny. "There is a lack of clarity and a need for perspective," says Gunnar Primeier.

On the occasion of the "Day of Care", employees of the Schongau hospital have positioned themselves in front of the building. Together with Verdi, they demand, among other things, the preservation of the location.

Schongau – One by one, employees of the Schongau hospital are gathering on the forecourt on Friday. Not everyone can take their lunch break at the same time, so it's a constant coming and going from 13 p.m. onwards. Nurses in particular, but also doctors and midwives are involved. On the occasion of the "Day of Care", the trade union Verdi has invited to an "active lunch break" for networking. In view of the "sensitive situation", according to union secretary Uschi Zwick, the employees are primarily concerned with "showing presence for their hospital". And to lend weight to demands.

Hospital employees demand site preservation and assurance of the 1n level

They have formulated four main concerns. First and foremost: the preservation of the Schongau site. At least as a "1n" house – with an intensive care unit, surgery and emergency care available around the clock, as Alexander Lang emphasizes in an interview with the local newspaper. How this can be implemented and how their jobs can be meaningfully preserved must be examined, says Rick Breunig.

The two take the supervisory board and also the district council to task, demand open discussions with the employees. The fact that district councillors say they have no decision-making power "sounds like excuses," says Breunig. In any case, a "1i" house could not last long, so the fear. "We want to continue practicing our profession. And in a hospital setting," says Lang. "We are a hospital. No long-term or short-term care."

Job security at the previous level in Schongau and recovery of stability

In addition, job security at the previous level in Schongau is demanded. And every effort should be made to regain the stability of the hospital. For this purpose, departments would have to be re-established in Schongau that had been relocated to Weilheim in the past. The maternity ward is also scheduled to reopen.

"Everyone wants to keep their jobs and provide for people"

Although a district council has declared that emergency care is well positioned and will continue to be so, Dr. Ingrid Breunig doubts this should the hospital be downgraded or close. Not only longer travel times, but also transport times are in the room. "We are responsible for first aid – nothing more," says Breunig, who also works as an emergency doctor. Not only does the necessary "manpower" be needed, but also, for example, equipment and a laboratory nearby. "Sometimes it can be too late."

She thinks it's "a shame that it's against each other," says Breunig with a view to Weilheim. In principle, they want the same thing: "Everyone wants to keep their jobs and provide for people – you just have to let us, then we'll be satisfied."

Hospital staff lack clarity and perspective

"It is important that it continues," says Deputy Chairwoman of the Works Council, Tanja Nowotny. Many employees are currently unsettled. There is a lack of clarity and perspective. "We need a concept, otherwise people will run away from us," says Gunnar Prielmeier. He could understand the helplessness of the supervisory board to a certain extent, as it was still unclear how the hospital reform would be implemented at the federal level. However, Starnberg is not far away from Weilheim. Should the latter become a specialist hospital, it would be in competition. The jobs in Schongau should be preserved, he and Ivette Filoni say. "It would be best if emergency care could be maintained here in accordance with the wishes of the population."

Krankenhaus GmbH Managing Director Thomas Lippmann also stopped by the meeting for a short time on Friday. That's okay – "That's what trade unions are for."

The number of hospital employees who are members of Verdi is still limited – but the number is increasing. "It's a process," says union secretary Zwick. We are happy to have a comrade-in-arms with whom we can achieve more than alone, says Lang.
