Munich/Königswinter – They were considered as good as extinct: we are talking about wolves. However, according to the European Parliament, up to 19,000 wolves are currently to be expected on the territory of the European Union (EU).

Release wolves in Germany for shooting? Farmers from the Rhineland protest for this

Polarizing: The cracks of sheep and other livestock have been increasing significantly in Germany for months. This provides explosive material. This Thursday (11 May), the Conference of Environment Ministers will meet in Königswinter, not far from Bonn, to discuss wolf populations.

The Rhenish Agricultural Association (RLV) has called for a rally on the topic of "Wolf policy: Change now!" in the vicinity of the summit. The association, with its approximately 15,000 members between the Ruhr area, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Bonn and Aachen, specifically calls for the "removal" of wolves, ergo permission to shoot the animals.

Königswinter, of all places: The region to the right of the Rhine, including the Siebengebirge, has been struggling with wolf cracks for some time. Local politicians had already demanded the release for shooting down after incidents in the neighboring district of Neuwied in December. In the adjacent north of Rhineland-Palatinate, among other things, the "Leuscheid pack" is said to cause concern.

Release wolves in Germany for shooting? Farmers report "animals killed in an emergency"

On its website, the RLV writes of "torn open highly pregnant sheep" and "animals killed in an emergency". The association's website states: "At the end of February alone, 39 animals fell victim to the Schermbeck wolf pack as a result of a single wolf attack in Dinslaken. The herd was secured with a recommended protective fence of 1.10 m height, and a livestock protection consultation had also taken place. In the past, protective fences have been overcome in the Schermbeck wolf area and even ponies have been attacked and killed."

In contrast to Germany, "EU states such as France have long relied on removal management to protect irreplaceable grazing livestock," writes the RLV. It is pointed out that the EU Parliament now considers "a downgrade of the protection status to be justified". In EU politics, there is apparently a prominent supporter for the protection of grazing animals from wolves: Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU).

Release wolves in Germany for shooting? Wolf apparently tore Ursula von der Leyen's pony

Striking: In September, the pony "Dolly" of former German Defense Minister von der Leyen was torn by a wolf in a paddock in Burgdorf near Hanover, according to media reports. The Hanover region then approved the shooting of the wolf with the designation "GW950m". A spokeswoman for the regional administration told the daily newspaper taz that the wolf had killed at least 13 farm animals - including cattle. After a legal process by the Society for the Protection of Wolves e.V., the Hanover Administrative Court revoked the temporary shooting permit.

Meanwhile, reported observations of wolves are increasing nationwide. According to the Kölnische Rundschau, a farmer in Königswinter said in mid-March that he had photographed two young wolves. According to the Badischer Zeitung, a mountain biker reported at the beginning of May of the sighting of two wolves in the Black Forest that had just torn a roebuck. And in an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), a man stated that a wolf had run in front of his car near Glienicke in Brandenburg. Do the animals lose their shyness?

According to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BFN), a total of 2021 registered wolves were detected in Germany between April 2022 and April 1175. A German neighbor is also wrestling with the issue. In the Veluwe, the largest forest area in the Netherlands between Arnhem and Zwolle, two cases caused a stir in the fall of 2022 when wolves came very close to humans. A video circulated on Twitter showing a racing cyclist apparently being chased by a wolf. Then a family with two toddlers documented how a wolf passed them just a few meters. According to an ecologist, an estimated 25 to 30 wolves have settled in this forest area alone. At the beginning of November, the Netherlands allowed the so-called deterrence by means of paintball balls.

Release wolves in Germany for shooting? Bavaria reacts and grants permission for removal

In the meantime, Bavaria has also reacted – and strictly. According to a recent decision by the state government, the crack of a sheep will be sufficient in the Free State in the future to be allowed to shoot wolves. As Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) announced at the end of April, there is no need for a DNA report. In an interview with Merkur.de, the German member of the European Parliament, Manuela Ripa (ÖDP), criticized the decision to shoot wolves.

"Shooting down should be the last resort. If we have already managed to reintroduce important species in Europe," said Ripa, who sits on the species protection committee in Brussels. She said: "Markus Söder has released the wolf for shooting. The wolf has a very important function in our ecosystem. Many conservationists have rejoiced that he is here again. Releasing the wolf for shooting is too short-sighted." (pm)
