"There will always be garbage": Street cleaner in Fürth earns a handsome salary thanks to a second job

Daniel works as a street cleaner in Fürth. The 30-year-old earns a handsome salary – but only because he also works as a fitness trainer. This is also how he finances his many tattoos.

Fürth - Shortly after five, Daniel sets off for work: The 30-year-old works as a street cleaner for the city of Fürth. Before that, he worked for years as a trainer in a gym – a job he continues to do part-time. But turning his passion into a profession every day frustrated him in the long run. He explains why in the documentary series "Is it worth it?" by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR). There he also discloses how much he earns per month.

He is satisfied with his current job – even if he sometimes has to reap the ridicule of passers-by. "I've already had the cases that approached me in the summer about whether I was doing community service," Daniel told BR. He has tattoos all over his body, up to his neck and hands. With his appearance, he would therefore encounter many prejudices. In addition to such negative comments, however, he often hears thanks for the work he does.

Daniel has to empty around 60 rubbish bins every day. Punctually at six o'clock in the morning, his working day starts, as the BR documentary shows. "Without us, the city would be very littered. Accordingly, people would feel less comfortable," says the 30-year-old, who lives in Nuremberg. He himself feels comfortable with his job, among other things because his employment with the city of Fürth is crisis-proof. "There will always be garbage," says the Nuremberg. Safe work is important to him. In addition, there are good opportunities for advancement.

He has only been working for the city as a street cleaner for about a year, for 39 hours a week. In retrospect, he would have opted for this job earlier. He was no longer happy with his previous job as a full-time fitness trainer: he often spent up to 14 hours a day in the studio – as a trainer, but also to train himself in his free time. "At some point, the hobby is no longer fun." That would have prompted him to apply to the city.

"You just have to stand over it" – street cleaners often experience ridicule in Fürth

On the way from one station to the next, Daniel drinks an energy drink. He has never tried coffee, nor has he tried alcohol, says the 30-year-old. He drives to bus stops to learn the garbage cans, as well as the city center. He also has to clean up the road seven and a half meters to the left and right of the buckets. "It's also often the case that you hear a 'thank you' – thank you for the work. Especially after New Year's Eve, this was very common," he describes in an interview with BR. "But there are also other people who smile at it. Who make fun of it."

City of Fürth as an employer

According to the city of Fürth, about 2,500 people work in the administration alone. Among other things, it offers positions for educators, engineers, IT project managers and cleaners. But then you take a shower and then it's good again."

Nürnberger also continues to work as a fitness trainer: 56 hours per week

As a street cleaner, the Nuremberg resident earns about 2,500 euros gross per month according to the collective agreement, which makes about 1,800 euros net salary. Around half past three it's time to call it a day. But Daniel makes his way to the gym on the same day: not only to train himself, but also to guide other people. "I already have an enormous amount of working hours a week. But for me, it's doable." He works about 56 weeks a week. But as a personal trainer and trainer in the studio, he earns an additional 1000 euros net per month. "If some people come in after half a year and say they've lost 20 kilos – that's usually worth a little more than the money."

Nevertheless, he can make good use of the cash injection: for his many tattoos, for which he spent a total of 10,000 euros in a single month last year. And for his dog Kai-Uwe, who lives with his mother. He describes it as: "My everything, my best friend. My haven of peace." In order to be able to afford his fitness products, he also regularly donates blood plasma. This earns him a fixed amount of 25 euros per donation.

He basically refrains from vacation and instead needs a fixed daily structure. "It's not worth it for me if I just live into the day." With his main job and part-time activities, he earns a handsome net salary of about 3,000 euros a month.
