Highlights: The 50-hour mega-strike in rail transport was averted at the last second. Despite the cancellation of the strike, many Deutsche Bahn trains will not run. The strike call continues to apply to private railways such as the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB), Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) and the Meridian. Only two-thirds of the planned long-distance trains will be on the road on Monday, according to a statement from DB. It will not be until Tuesday that all ICE and IC trains will run again.

The 50-hour mega-strike in rail transport was averted at the last second. Nevertheless, there are restrictions for passengers.

After a settlement before the labor court in Frankfurt on Saturday, the railway declared: "Millions of travelers can breathe a sigh of relief." This also includes the people in the Munich region who use the S-Bahn. Because the strike announced for Sunday, 22 p.m., to Tuesday, 24 a.m., was "suspended for the time being", as it was called by the EDC.

Private railways are still on strike

So it's all in butter for travelers and commuters? Apparently, it's not that simple. Despite the cancellation of the strike, many Deutsche Bahn trains will not run. In addition, the strike call continues to apply to private railways such as the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB), Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) and the Meridian. It is therefore still assumed that there are no trains running in the five networks of the BRB. The private providers advise to inform yourself online about strike status and train services.

The S-Bahn trains are to run regularly

After all, the S-Bahn trains should keep to their regular timetables. At least that's what was announced on the trains on Sunday. In long-distance transport, on the other hand, there will be massive restrictions. Only two-thirds of the planned long-distance trains will be on the road on Monday, according to a statement from DB. It will not be until Tuesday that all ICE and IC trains will run again.

The company justifies the restrictions by saying that the return to normal operations after the strike cancellation is "a one-time tour de force". For the first time, rail operations had to be "reorganized from shutdown to ramp-up" within 24 hours, DB said. To this end, around 50,000 train journeys in long-distance and local transport alone as well as the associated shift and deployment plans have been replanned nationwide since Saturday. Vehicles would have to be rescheduled and, in some cases, brought to new departure points.

On Sunday, there was a lot of activity at the main station

Despite the cancellation of the warning strike, the railway had maintained its offer that tickets purchased for Monday or Tuesday were already valid on trains on Sunday. Apparently, many passengers made use of this, because there was significantly more traffic at Munich's main train station than on other Sundays.

Tickets for trains that are cancelled on Monday or Tuesday can also be used afterwards (see also » MONEY & MARKET). In view of the Ascension Day holiday on Thursday, the railway is expected to be full from Wednesday to Friday anyway. With the tickets redeemed later, it could be really tight on the trains.

Deutsche Bahn made concessions on the minimum wage

The fact that the strike is not taking place in large parts is thanks to the settlement before the Frankfurt Labor Court. The railway had made an urgent application there – and apparently made concessions. "The employer has stated unequivocally in court that he meets our demands on the minimum wage," said an EVG spokesman after the court hearing.

The fact that the statutory minimum wage of twelve euros is laid down as a basis is one of the central demands of the EDC in the collective bargaining conflict. So far, many employees have only achieved the amount through surcharges.

The EDC is now calling on the railways to negotiate immediately. If the company breaks its word, "we will call for a strike again," the EDC spokesman warned.
