Retired chef and grandmother Andrea Marie says her longtime boyfriend, Graham Martin, finally asked her to marry him after a relationship that has lasted 35 years.
Throughout their relationship, Retin told Andrea that their commitment to each other was strong enough that they should not officially marry. Andrea had already come to terms with this reality, and never expected it to happen, on the eve of her 60th birthday. But the future groom surprised, big time.
"All of Graham's friends were so shocked," she laughs, "I almost had a heart attack too, I was so surprised when he proposed marriage," Andrea said, adding, "It was really a wonderful proposal and so unexpected. I have to keep pinching myself."

The bride-to-be said Martin, once he decided to propose, went all the way, including even asking her 88-year-old father, Andrew Murray, for her hand, who must have come to terms with reality and was just as amazed. The father gave his permission before the proposal.
The young lovers from Rytania were on a beach in Scotland when Martin knelt down and asked Andrea to be his bride. A phrase she never thought she'd hear from her wedding-refusing boyfriend since 1988. "I thought we were going to look at a trailer and then he suddenly knelt down," Marie recalls. "It was so romantic and special – it really moved me. It's good to know that romance is still alive," she said with a laugh, adding that although they had agreed that they wouldn't marry but would be together forever, she kind of wanted to walk down the aisle in a wedding dress. "I hinted at marriage for years, and so did my friends," she recalls. "And then I just gave up."
The happy couple plan to hold a ceremony at the hotel where Murray used to work. Her father will accompany him through the aisle, and all their children and grandchildren will also be part of the wedding." Even though it's only happening now, I'm so excited to declare our commitment to each other in front of family and friends," she smiles, "I could go on without it, but it's definitely the icing on the cake."
