2023-05-14T08:19:15.264Z

Highlights: EMS Berg ran aground near Rose Island on Monday, and on Thursday the two largest ships on Lake Starnberg also failed. Two screws were deformed when touching the ground in the area of Rose Island. The electric ship EMS Berg, which has only been in service since 2021, will probably only be able to sail again in one to two weeks, according to the shipping company. Four scheduled trips were cancelled on Thursday. The shipyard is working at full speed to ensure that more trips can take place again this Friday.

It is a series of breakdowns that has not been seen for a long time: The electric ship EMS Berg ran aground near Rose Island on Monday, and on Thursday the two largest ships on Lake Starnberg also failed.

Update Friday, May 12, 9:22 a.m.: The streak of bad luck of lake shipping on Lake Starnberg continues. The MS Starnberg could be repaired by Thursday evening and was supposed to leave for a charter trip for a company event, but a new defect occurred. When the ship sailed out of the port, the coupling failed, the catamaran could no longer be steered and drifted against the pier of the BYC next door. There was no damage to the ship, said Michael Grießer, managing director of shipping, on Friday morning. They are trying hard to get spare parts. The jetty was damaged. The damage to the "Seeshaupt" could be repaired by Friday morning, she is sailing again. The "Bernried" is also fit and sails charter trips. The EMS mountain is still on land because of the damage to the screw and will remain so for a while. In any case, shipping will reduce regular services on Fridays and weekends.

Starnberg – Shipping on Lake Starnberg has had a real streak of bad luck these days. Three ships failed with technical problems, including the two largest: the MS Starnberg and the MS Seeshaupt. The electric ship EMS Berg, which has only been in service since 2021, will probably only be able to sail again in one to two weeks, according to the shipping company. Michael Grießer, Managing Director of Bayerische Seenschifffahrt, can hardly believe the current situation: "Ship failures happen again and again, but normally they are spread over the season," he said in an interview with the Starnberger Merkur.

In fact, this should not have happened for a long time: From Starnberg, four scheduled trips were cancelled on Thursday. In the course of the day, the shipping company announced on its homepage the lines that were still running from Tutzing. The failures were "completely unexpected". Especially since the season that started at Easter is still young and the boats have been maintained and overhauled over the winter months. Grießer also pointed this out.

The 56-metre-long flagship on Lake Starnberg, the catamaran Starnberg, did not even leave the port on Thursday. During the daily routine check in the morning, the captain received an error message in the area of electronics. Grießer explains: "It is checked whether the ship's propellers can be rotated 360 degrees. The check was aborted by the system. That's why we didn't drive for safety reasons." Behind the problem is probably a defective relay.

The MS Seeshaupt also did not work on Thursday as it should. Managing Director Grießer speaks of a "sudden drop in performance". The captain then turned around and drove back to the port of Starnberg. Today, Friday, a technician from the engine manufacturer will address the problem, Grießer said. And he assured on Thursday afternoon: The shipyard is working at full speed to ensure that more trips can take place again this Friday.

The short round trips at 11.45 a.m. and 13.05 p.m. from Starnberg will certainly be cancelled at the weekend. Alternatives are the northern round trip from 13.20 p.m. or the one-way trip to Tutzing at 11.35 a.m. The background: The EMS Berg had already run aground on Monday. Two screws are deformed. The shipping company sends them to a repairer in northern Germany, while the ship rests on the slipway. The incident occurred near Rose Island, of all places, where the water is particularly shallow. Due to a hydraulic problem, the electric ship drifted off and touched the ground.
