In 15 minutes with the U6 to the airport: New push for express train in Munich

2023-05-14T12:26:32.100Z

Highlights: State Chancellery chief Florian Herrmann and Kirchheim's mayor Maximilian Böltl (both CSU) want the U6 to be expanded. They suggest three possible routes for the line to the airport, including one with a possible stop in Hallbergmoos. The U6 runs between Klinikum Großhadern and Garching – and soon also to Munich Airport. For the expansion, the exact costs of which have yet to be determined, new tracks would have to be laid.

In just 15 minutes from Marienplatz to Munich Airport – this is to be made possible by an expansion of the subway line 6. For this express train, there is now a new push from politics.

Munich – There it rolls in, the next idea for a fast airport connection: An extension of the U6 could better connect the airport to local transport and relieve roads in the surrounding area, believe State Chancellery chief Florian Herrmann and Kirchheim's mayor Maximilian Böltl (both CSU).

An express S-Bahn has been discussed for a long time. This idea should also be pursued, according to a letter from Herrmann and Böltl, which is available to our editors. At the same time, they ask that the U6 expansion with three possible routes be re-examined.

U-Bahn and S-Bahn junctions in Neufahrn and Hallbergmoos

This would affect the districts of Freising and Munich. That's why Böltl and Herrmann want to work together for it - Böltl is running in this year's state election for the constituency of Munich-Land, Herrmann sits for the district of Freising in the state parliament. For the expansion, the exact costs of which have yet to be determined, new tracks would have to be laid north of the U6 stop Garching-Forschungszentrum.

One possibility would be to extend the line to the airport - with a possible stop in Hallbergmoos. But you could also only lead them to Hallbergmoos, where travelers would have to change to the S8. "This would create a meaningful hub for the U-Bahn and S-Bahn," says Böltl.

The destination is a direct train that takes 15 minutes from Marienplatz to the airport

This also provides for option three: By expanding only to Neufahrn, the U6 would cross the S1 there. Whether the routes should run underground or above ground must be examined, says Böltl. "The goal is that there is an airport connection from the center in 15 minutes."

Today, it takes about 1 minutes from Marienplatz to the airport with the S8 or S40. "It would be conceivable to have a direct train that only stops at the TU Garching campus between Marienplatz and the airport." And Herrmann explains: Fleet public transport connections would also be worthwhile for many working people who commute to and from Munich.

Maximilian Böltl and Florian Herrmann suggest re-examination

The idea of a U6 extension is not new. It was last audited in 2021, the letter said. The letter is addressed to the district administrators of Munich and Freising, Christoph Göbel (CSU) and Helmut Petz (Free Voters), to Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU), Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) and to railway boss Richard Lutz.

According to the 2021 analysis, the costs would be higher than the benefits. However, Böltl now explains that this assessment does not take into account important factors. "A new method also takes into account the economic benefits of the expansion of public transport."

Munich transport company doubts the usefulness of the U6 expansion

And Herrmann says: When the U6 is expanded, it will also be used - by commuters, but also students. This is because part of the TU's new aerospace faculty will soon move into the new LabCampus at the airport on an interim basis. The U6 expansion would connect it with the Freising Weihenstephan campus and the one in Garching.

An airport spokesman did not comment on the idea at the request of our editors. For the Munich transport company, there is much to be said against it. Among other things, only commuters in the area north of Münchner Freiheit would benefit. For everyone else, an express S-Bahn would be better - also because it could go faster than a subway.
