The young man suspected of murdering his parents in Netanya claimed during interrogation that his father murdered his mother - and he stabbed him to death in self-defense. The city's Magistrate's Court on Saturday extended the detention of the suspect, 23-year-old Vladislav Popov, for nine days. The judge accepted the request to send him for psychiatric observation.

On Friday, two bodies were found in a house on Bechor Shitrit Street in the city following a report of blood marks outside. At first, the police believed it was a mother and son, but later the suspicion grew that the deceased were parents in their 40s. To date, a final identification of the two has not yet been obtained. However, following the change of direction, their son was arrested that day in the Netanya area.

According to Popov's version, he recognized his father stabbing his mother, and tried to save her. In response, he took a knife into his hand and stabbed the father. However, only one knife was found at the scene, while according to this sequence of events, 2 knives were involved in the murder. A dead dog was also found at the scene. At the time of his arrest, Popov had cuts on his hands, which he said were caused by the struggle with his father. The version is also expected to be examined in relation to the psychiatric opinion regarding Popov's competence.

"I was impressed by a long conversation with the suspect that there is a need for a psychiatric observation," said attorney Avi Cohen, who represents him on behalf of the Public Defender's Office, at the start of the court hearing. The police objected and asked to extend his detention by 15 days. Finally, an agreement was reached on the length of the remand extension. Judge Itai Regev agreed to the request for a psychiatric examination. "There is reasonable suspicion that the suspect is involved in the offenses," the judge ruled, adding: "I am convinced that there are reasonable grounds for fear that his release will lead to disruption of proceedings and endanger public safety."

Cohen said after the hearing: "The suspect is a young man with no criminal record, who claims that his father stabbed his mother to death, and he tried to save her and cut his fingers from his father's knife. In response, he was forced to defend his life, took a knife and stabbed his father, as an act of self-defense. Under these circumstances, it is very important to collect forensic findings from the scene – TA and DNA from the knives, if they were indeed caught. In addition, the court accepted my request and ordered that he be taken for observation and that an opinion be submitted by the district psychiatrist regarding his condition and mental fitness."
