Bad Tölz – When it's someone's birthday, they get presents. Actually. In the case of the Tölzer Lions Club, things are different: On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, which will be celebrated in October, the club is distributing gifts – in the form of a social prize.

With a total of 20,000 euros, it supports exemplary voluntary commitment. The project is supported by the Tölzer Kurier, which will present the award-winning projects. The jury includes District Administrator Josef Niedermaier and Tölz Mayor Ingo Mehner.

Bringing hidden engagement to the public eye

"The diverse commitment of volunteers and supporters remains far too often invisible. Everyone knows that without them, human interaction would lack a lot of warmth," says the announcement of the prize. It is precisely this often hidden commitment that the Lions Club wants to bring to the public.

"We hope that we will also address institutions that have so far tended to remain in the background and have not yet benefited so much from funding," says designated club president Rudolf Huber. After all, supporting volunteer work has always been one of the club's tasks. Among other things, the Tölzer Tafel has been supported for years.

The idea for the social award came from the Starnberg Lions colleagues, who launched a similar initiative in 2019. The three cash prizes – 4,000, 3,000 and 2,000 euros – will be awarded in two categories. On the one hand, there are projects worthy of support in the field of children, youth and family. The second category includes projects dedicated to the elderly and/or care. In addition, two special prizes, each endowed with 1,000 euros, will be awarded.

Any institution, facility, group or association is eligible to participate

Any institution, facility, group or association that is committed to social interaction is eligible to participate - in particular in the following areas: public health care, youth care and youth welfare, education, national and vocational training, care for the elderly, assistance for the disabled and sports for the disabled, tolerance and international understanding, culture and persons and groups of people in need of help. The institution is to be active in the club's sphere of activity, which includes the southern district and the city of Penzberg.

The submitted project should not have been submitted more than twelve months ago, if it is a completed one. However, if the project is still in the planning phase, it should be started within a year.

The deadline for applications is Monday, July 10. How the whole thing works and what documents are necessary can be found on the club's homepage: www.lc-bad-toelz.de. The award ceremony will then take place in autumn on 6 October – at the anniversary celebration of the Lions Club Bad Tölz.

The winners are selected by a jury. This consists of District Administrator Josef Niedermaier, Mayor Ingo Mehner, Kurier editorial director Veronika Ahn-Tauchnitz, club president Rudolf Huber and club secretary Susanne van Lier.

Mayor Ingo Mehner and District Administrator Josef Niedermaier are pleased about their jury task

Mehner is looking forward to the task: "It's nice to see that there is so much volunteer work here," he says. But of course, this is not a matter of course. "That's why I'm grateful for the Lions Club's initiative and hope that this award will motivate many people to continue volunteering and perhaps inspire some to become active for the first time or again. Volunteering is usually selfless. Nevertheless, I hope that as many people as possible will apply for the prize."

Niedermaier also emphasizes the value of volunteer work: "Those who serve society not only serve others, but also themselves. Our volunteers are a treasure, an indispensable support in our coexistence."

"I always call it the glue in our pluralistic society," the district administrator continues: "That's why we have to show the joy of it, we have to appreciate it and be grateful for it – just as we would do with a gift that people give us without asking what the consideration might look like.
