While the first tourists are expected from June 15, three emergency positions remain desperately vacant at the Arcachon hospital center.

On the Arcachon basin, the flower season begins around June 15 and is accompanied by a flood of tourists. But only one month before their arrival, the hospital center of the eponymous commune is "under tension". Of the 14 posts planned for ordinary time, three emergency doctor positions are to be filled. A vacancy, notably justified by two maternity leaves, which worries the director of the establishment, Julien Rossignol. "Summer, here, worries us by definition," says the executive who sees the population to be treated double at the arrival of sunny days.

In the perimeter, which includes 200,000 inhabitants from Teste-de-Buch to Biganos (Gironde) via Sanguinet and Parentis-en-Born (Landes), 120 daily visits have already been recorded in emergencies in winter. In summer, the peak can be up to 200 people per day for 3 emergency doctors present in ideal configuration. "It's hard," says the mayor of Arcachon, Yves Foulon. Before stressing that "thanks to a very precise organization", the service remains open. To attract applicants and simplify the task, an unscheduled care centre, adjacent to the hospital, must be set up as soon as possible and no later than July 1.

Bordeaux: the CHU has made its decision on maintaining emergencies

Wage caps

Aware that last year the terrible fires have softened the pressure on emergencies due to the departure of summer visitors, Julien Rossignol plans this year "a more muscular device". Concretely: two general practitioners, a nurse and an admissions officer, stationed in the car park, will be responsible for receiving, redirecting or even taking care of those who do not have their place in the emergency room. Or "30 to 40% of patients, who add a significant workload," says the director of the hospital of Arcachon. He reminds us: even if the waiting times are long, because "the 15 is also overloaded", it is necessary to try to call the SAMU before going to the emergency. This surplus, to which are added the administrative burdens of finding beds in the services after care, is indeed one of the main causes of the defection of emergency doctors according to him.

To relieve them of these "air traffic controller" tasks, an additional admissions secretary must be recruited. Essential adjustments to hope to attract emergency doctors. Between the cap on temporary workers' salaries in public hospitals and the new generation's desire for "life balance," the pile of resumes is almost empty. Noting that young people do not hesitate to ask for part-time, Julien Rossignol tries to "adapt to this new way of thinking" to "find the virtuous circle that existed in the emergency room of Arcachon until last year".
