The Central District Court convicted the terrorists in Elad, As'ad al-Rifa'i (20) and Subhi Abu Shakir (21). The two confessed and were convicted of four counts of aggravated murder and other offenses. The two were sentenced to four life sentences and a cumulative sentence of 20 years in prison for the other offenses, as part of the agreements reached by the State Prosecutor's Office and representatives of the two.
Last February, Shimon Matouf (75), one of the wounded in the attack, died of his wounds. Shimon was the security guard at the city park where the attack took place. Oren Ben Yiftah, Yonatan Habakkuk and Boaz Goli were also murdered in the attack
The indictment indicates that the defendants worked in electrical work in Elad, even though they did not have permits to enter Israel. In August 2021, Abu Shakir decided to carry out a terrorist attack in Israel and die as a "shaheed," due to the death of his friend in clashes with the IDF. At first, al-Rifa'i refused to cooperate, but later, after the death of another friend of Abu Shakir's, the two decided to carry out an attack and murder Israeli Jews wherever they were, for nationalistic and ideological motives. To that end, the two armed themselves with knives and axes, and on 05.05.22 they arrived in the city of Elad, where they stabbed and threw the driver who was driving them out of the car. Immediately afterwards, they embarked on a killing spree on foot in the streets of the city, during which they murdered two other civilians with an axe and attempted to murder five civilians who were seriously wounded, sometimes in front of their children. The two then fled the scene and continued to flee in open areas for three days, until they were apprehended after an extensive manhunt by security forces.
