"Check without coverage": Welfare Minister Yaakov Margi and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich reached understandings Tuesday evening regarding raising the salaries of rehabilitative daycare assistants for toddlers with disabilities aged 0-3. The Ministry of Social Affairs issued this announcement in light of the strike threats from the organizations operating the rehabilitative daycare centers, which were supposed to begin sanctions tomorrow.

However, Israel Hayom reported that the ministers' decision was made without coordination with the rehabilitative daycare organizations, which learned about it from media reports. "We were surprised to discover that the Ministry of Social Affairs and Finance is announcing and celebrating an agreement on the issue of the salaries of aides and a solution to the crisis in rehabilitative daycare centers, when no one updated us on the matter," the organizations operating the rehabilitative daycare centers said.

The organizations announced that they had contacted the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Affairs as long as they were not informed otherwise, and tomorrow's strike – the first in the history of the rehabilitative daycare assistants in Israel – is expected to take place as planned. "We immediately contacted the Welfare Ministry asking for answers and to make sure that this was not a check without coverage. At this stage, we are not aware of any indemnity that will be paid by the committee in favor of the assistants. As long as we are not informed otherwise, tomorrow's strike will go ahead as planned."

In Israel there are 4,000 toddlers aged 0-3 with various disabilities who attend rehabilitative daycare centers. Following the signing with the kindergarten assistants to raise their salaries, a mass exodus of aides in the rehabilitation centers began, which in recent years have suffered from an ongoing shortage of manpower. This created a real possibility of closing many dormitories next school year.

As a result, the organizations operating the daycare centers announced a strike until their request to equalize the salaries of the daycare assistants with those of the kindergarten assistants is accepted by the Ministry of Finance. According to the agreement reached now, the employment conditions of the assistants in the rehabilitation centers will be compared to those of the kindergarten assistants aged 3-6. The indemnification of the operators for an increase in the salaries of the aides will go into effect immediately upon approval of the state budget, which is expected to be passed by the Knesset immediately after Shavuot.

After the announcement, several daycare organizations notified Minister Yaakov Margi of their intention to strike, including Perach, which operates 15 rehabilitation centers. Minister Margi welcomed the move: "I thank the Minister of Finance and the professional teams for the agreements regarding the indemnification of the rehabilitation centers. The agreement we reached corrects the injustice and compares the employment conditions of the assistants in the rehabilitation centers to those in the local government. I thank the dormitory operators for conducting substantive negotiations. Some of them have already announced the lifting of the strike threat, and I call on the other operators to do the same."
