Highlights: Nuremberg Airport has posted a photo from the 60s on its Facebook page. It shows a sunny terrace with umbrellas, tables and chairs, from which guests can watch an airplane – up close. The restaurant was opened in 1955, coinciding with the opening of Germany's first commercial airport built after the war. The current visitors' terrace is higher, larger and more modern. It is located on the roof of a newer building complex and also in the open air.

With a photo from the 60s, Nuremberg Airport is reminiscent of a legendary location. A lot has changed since then, but a terrace with a view of the planes still exists today.

Nuremberg – Nuremberg Airport has posted a photo from the 60s on its Facebook page that has made many users nostalgic. It shows a sunny terrace with umbrellas, tables and chairs, from which guests can watch an airplane – up close. "The airport 60 years ago" is the title of the article. "In the 60s, there was still the airport restaurant with a terrace directly on the apron," writes Nuremberg Airport.

Café at the runway: Nuremberg Airport reminds us of the 60s in a Facebook post

The terrace of the former airport restaurant was affectionately called the "café with runway" by the people of Nuremberg, says airport spokesman Jan Beinßen. It was very busy and very popular – the noise and stench of the planes taking off and landing obviously didn't bother the visitors.

The restaurant was opened in 1955, coinciding with the opening of Germany's first commercial airport built after the war. As far as personnel are concerned, Nuremberg Airport has also remained a pioneer: At only 34 years of age, a Nuremberg resident is the youngest airport fire chief in Germany.

In the comments under the photo from the 60s, some users express their nostalgia: "In the incoming planes, you could sometimes see faces in the windows," recalls one user. According to him, there was even a playground at the western end of the apron. "The playground was separated from the apron by a fence of perhaps one meter high," he continues. "I can still remember the smell of burnt kerosene. It's a shame I can't live to see that today."

Facebook users nostalgic for the terrace from the old days – successor: Modern visitor terrace

From the 60s and 70s, the reconstruction and expansion of the airport began, says airport spokesman Beinßen. "The catering establishments were then relocated to a new building complex." Where the café terrace with a direct view of the landing planes used to be, there is now a security checkpoint.

But even today there is still a terrace at Nuremberg Airport. The current visitors' terrace is higher, larger and more modern. It is located on the roof of a newer building complex and also in the open air.

In the 60s, only a small fence separated the guests from the runway - today there is a net and high glass panes so as not to interfere with the many air traffic, as Beinßen explains. Around Easter this year, Nuremberg Airport even reached a passenger record with over 180,000 passengers in two weeks.

Terrace with a view of aircraft at Nuremberg Airport will soon be served again

Even if the photo of the legendary café on the runway made Facebook users nostalgic, such a terrace would simply no longer meet safety standards these days. A Facebook user writes that similar restaurants still exist in Croatia, for example. According to Beinßen, this is only possible in Germany at very small airfields.

The new visitor terrace serves as a beer garden, event venue or ice rink, says the airport spokesman. And soon there will be catering there again, as was the case a few years ago. Currently, the airport is still looking for a suitable tenant.

From then on, visitors will be able to watch the planes with food and drinks as they did about 80 years ago – only from a little further away and a little further up. (lea)
