On Sunday, a local woman broke her ankle while hiking on the woodpecker heads. The fog did not make it easy for the helpers to rescue them.
Bad Reichenhall – On Sunday, 14 May, an accident on the woodpecker heads in the northern Lattengebirge in the Berchtesgaden Alps caused a difficult operation by the mountain rescuers. There, a 40-year-old woman had injured herself while hiking. Due to the fog, the rescue helicopter had difficulties and additional mountain rescuers had to be brought in.
40-year-old injured in the Berchtesgaden Alps – approach of the rescue helicopter fails
As reported by the Bavarian Red Cross, the local woman twisted her ankle at around 14 p.m. a few meters below the summit cross and broke her ankle. Her companion then made an emergency call to the Traunstein control center.
However, since the summit was covered in fog for a long time due to the mixed weather, the Traunstein rescue helicopter with the name "Christoph 14" could not fly to the accident site. At first, the crew tried an approach over the east ridge, but this failed again due to weather conditions.
Locals with broken ankle: mountain rescuers climb on foot to the scene of the accident
The rescue helicopter then dropped an emergency doctor and a mountain rescuer below the cloud line, who then climbed to the scene of the accident on foot. There were also four other mountain rescuers with equipment, who were set down in two additional approaches with the winch. This allowed the woman to receive emergency medical care.
But in order for the rescue helicopter to pick her up, the injured woman had to be brought as far down the valley as possible in the stretcher. For this purpose, a ten-man foot squad from the Bad Reichenhall and Teisendorf-Anger mountain rescue teams set out on the ascent. However, the mountain rescuers were lucky.
