At each ferry arrival, bringing candidates campaigning for next Sunday's national elections, a handful of Amorgos residents greet them, banners in hand. They are protesting against the construction of a new port on this island where Luc Besson's famous film, The Big Blue, was shot. These natives fear seeing their crystal clear waters polluted and their landscape denatured, "already damaged by wind turbines, which multiply and pollute our beautiful hills," denounces the collective of citizens of Katapola.
However, according to Lefteris Karaïskos, mayor of this pearl of the Cyclades, "a new port in Katapola is essential in view of the increasing number of visitors every summer. We do not have an airport and we cannot continue to welcome our tourists in such precarious conditions. This can be dangerous in the long run, especially since ships are unable to dock."
