In an attempt to execute several arrest warrants, the situation in Chemnitz has come to a head. The suspect aims a crossbow at the police officers. They then grab their service weapons and shoot.
Chemnitz - A police operation in Chemnitz that initially seemed routine escalated on Wednesday. According to the police, a 31-year-old man with a crossbow aimed at the officers. They then fired with their service weapon. The 31-year-old was hit and was taken to hospital injured. Police and rescue workers were on site with a large contingent.
According to the police, the officers had visited the apartment of the 31-year-old in the early afternoon in order to implement existing arrest warrants. However, the man refused to open the door. After that, smoke came out of the apartment, whereupon the police opened the apartment door.
The 31-year-old had aimed a crossbow at the officers. A bullet hit a police shield. After that, the man continued to point the gun at the police officers. The officers, for their part, grabbed their service weapons and fired several shots. The attacker had been overwhelmed.
The fire, which the suspect had ignited in the apartment itself, had been extinguished. No police officers were injured in the operation. There was no danger to residents or a nearby school.
Against the man had a total of four arrest warrants for bodily injury offenses, said a police spokesman. After the escalation on Wednesday, new investigations would be added. The exact facts are still being examined. Dpa
