SUVs and large vehicles will pay more for parking in Lyon from 2024

2023-05-17T09:39:20.293Z

Highlights: The price of parking will now be proportional to the weight of vehicles in Lyon. Large SUVs and particularly bulky cars are in the sights of the ecologist executive. A "fairer" pricing "in the face of the challenges of congestion of public space and climate emergency," says the deputy mayor of Lyon in charge of urban logistics, Valentin Lungenstrass. The tariff schedule should be adapted 'in principle' for visitors, only 5% of whom would a priori be concerned by the increased tariff.

The green municipality has set up a new fee schedule in three price brackets for resident parking with a penalty for the heaviest vehicles, which consume more fuel and space.

The price of parking will now be proportional to the weight of vehicles in Lyon. The ecologist executive has unveiled a new progressive pricing of resident subscriptions that will come into force in 2024, with a penalty for the largest SUVs in particular. "In order to guarantee a fair sharing of public space, to be part of the global health policy and to respond to the climate emergency, the City of Lyon is adapting its parking policy," the municipality said in a statement on Wednesday.

Three price bands will replace the current single resident subscription rate of 20 euros per month. The first, set at 15 euros for large families, from three children, and residents with the lowest incomes, should concern one in two Lyon households, according to the municipality. It also includes electric vehicles "with the exception of particularly bulky and impactful vehicles", as well as small thermal city cars weighing less than one tonne.

'Greater climate impact'

The second tranche, at the rate of 30 euros monthly, will concern thermal vehicles from 1000 to 1725 kilos and plug-in hybrids up to 1900 kilos. Finally, the price increased to 45 euros monthly will concern the heaviest vehicles. Large SUVs and particularly bulky cars are in the sights of the ecologist executive. A "fairer" pricing "in the face of the challenges of congestion of public space and climate emergency," says the deputy mayor of Lyon in charge of urban logistics, Valentin Lungenstrass.

The municipality highlights the observation made by the citizens' convention for the climate "of a heavier and enlargement of motor vehicles". "The heaviest vehicles have a much greater impact on the climate," she said. They consume more fuel, they require more materials to build and, for electric vehicles, much larger batteries." On his Twitter account, the elected official also recalls a greater accidentology of SUVs, braking more emitting fine particles and a greater occupation of public space to the detriment of other less polluting modes of transport.

This tariff schedule should be adapted 'in principle' for visitors, only 5% of whom would a priori be concerned by the increased tariff. As for professionals, specific devices are planned for the health and urgent troubleshooting professions but also for traders and craftsmen.
