Suddenly, the masses of water were there: After heavy rain, the FFW Freising had to move out to Neustift on Tuesday: Full cellars and streets that resembled torrents.
Freising – It had rained a lot lately, since the beginning of the month, the German Weather Service reported up to 100 millimeters per square meter for the Freising area – as much as it had not rained in the whole of May in recent years. "On Tuesday afternoon, more water was added locally. That was too much for the sewerage system and for the vegetation - and that meant work for the Freising volunteer fire brigade," reports FFW spokesman Matthias Spanrad.

The FFW activist continues: "On Tuesday afternoon, shortly after 15 p.m., the scene of the incident was the Neustift district, and here Moltke, Körnerstraße and Bismarckstraße, but above all Wiesenthalstraße: cellars and underground car parks were full, and the streets in particular had turned into streams within a short time. Especially at higher points, the water had collected and was now running towards the lower places."

Fire brigade several hours of operation
For several hours, the forces of the main fire station 1 with four vehicles and around 20 women and men were busy "working through several deployment sites in Neustift". Two underground car parks were pumped out in a short time with technical equipment to prevent worse, and pumping was also carried out in cellars in several places. Spanrad adds: "In addition, the emergency services supported the team at the Freising building yard in clearing the water drains, some of which were clogged by green waste and wood, in order to give the water the opportunity to drain off in a regulated manner. After a good three hours, all deployment sites were finally processed.
However, it was not the end of the day for the volunteers, according to the FFW spokesman: "At 19 p.m., the automatic fire alarm system was triggered in a company on Münchner Straße. Although the trigger was not the rain, it was the water flowing out of a pressure relief valve. So it's a false alarm." (ft)
