Visions for the Schnitzer site in Bernbeuren: Students present their concepts

2023-05-17T06:28:22.589Z

Highlights: Around 30 students of the "Energy-efficient Planning and Building" course of study dealt with a redesign of the Schnitzer site as part of their bachelor's theses. The students showed the curious citizens and local councillors how they would transform the listed ensemble of barn, inn and pilgrim's house. Most would like to create windows and glass facades for daylight, install façade-preserving interior insulation or install PV systems on the roofs. However, none of the ideas presented will be put into practice – at least in the near future.

The future of the Schnitzer site has been on the minds of the people of Bernbeuren for a long time. Now students are looking at a possible redesign of the building ensemble.

Bernbeuren – Students at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences have taken the people of Bernbeuren on a little journey of thought: What would it be like if the vacant Schnitzer area in the town centre became a lively village centre – with shopping facilities, cafés and restaurants, but also event rooms, co-working spaces, assisted living, an open-air stage or guest rooms? What would it look like if a modern glass cube connected the old barn with the historic inn, and what feeling would you have if you could look outside through a glass façade between the supporting beams?

Around 30 students of the "Energy-efficient Planning and Building" course of study dealt with a redesign of the Schnitzer site as part of their bachelor's theses. The eight best were invited to the Auerberghalle to present their results. Using models and posters, the students showed the curious citizens and local councillors how they would transform the listed ensemble of barn, inn and pilgrim's house into a modern town centre. All of them also integrated their individual ideas about the local supplier, which is scheduled to open in the Schnitzer-Stadel in 2025.

Students deal with Schnitzer site - site visit last November

For the project, the students spent four days in Bernbeuren last November. They took a close look at the existing site and asked the local people what use they would like to see for the Schnitzer site in the future.

On the basis of their results, the students finally developed their ideas: In addition to the architectural redesign, the focus was also on the energetic conversion. For example, most would like to create windows and glass facades for daylight, install façade-preserving interior insulation or install PV systems on the roofs.

Not all concepts can be turned into reality, explained Judith Sandmeier from the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, who supervised the work. "Some models have also been further developed." So one student, Esra Köken, approached the matter completely freely and thought about how the old carver's barn could be completely restructured: She divided the building into individual modules and pulled them apart, creating narrow, staggered mini-barns. She would glaze the newly created fronts and thus provide plenty of light.

Implementation of the ideas is not planned

Another student, Marina Nieberle, focused on the historic inn from the 17th century, which is adjacent to the old pilgrim's house. With a view to the flourishing tourism in the Alpine region and the connection to the Roman road "Via Augusta", she would like to revive the former hostel for cyclists and other travelers. Meanwhile, the inn should once again become a meeting place for locals. As a connecting element, it would place a glass cube between the barn and the inn.

The visitors were enthusiastic about the fresh ideas of the students. When Mayor Karl Schleich asked them to choose a favorite for the "Audience Award", it was obvious that some of them found it difficult to decide on a project. In the end, Marina Nieberle's concept received the most encouragement.

However, none of the ideas presented will be put into practice – at least not in the near future. There is a lack of financial resources for this, as Schleich said. And feasibility was not the goal of the project either. "For us, it's all about inspiration and brainstorming," said the mayor, who concluded by thanking the students for their commitment. In addition to cheese packages, which he distributed on behalf of the municipality, all participants will receive a certificate. "Something like that should look good on your CV."
