Highlights: On June 23 at the town hall of Papeete, ten young women will try to obtain the scarf of Miss Tahiti 2023 and succeed Herenui Tuheiava. Among them, three candidates will not be eligible to participate in the Miss France 2024 contest because of their size. If the selection criteria have relaxed considerably since last year, only one remains: to measure at least 1.70 meters. To limit the number of outfits to be made and cover the widest possible range of sizes, the organizers have therefore set this lower limit at 1.69 meters.

As every year, almost, it is the Miss Tahiti contest that opens the calendar of regional elections for Miss France. The explanation for this lower limit imposed is technical and logistical. During each Miss France ceremony broadcast live on TF1, the outfits used for the tables of the fifteen semi-finalists and five finalists are prepared in advance but no one knows in advance who will wear them. "For the final painting, we have eight different dresses to consider all the possibilities among the five girls who will be qualified," explained artistic producer Frédéric Gilbert. To limit the number of outfits to be made and cover the widest possible range of sizes, the organizers have therefore set this lower limit at 1.70 meters.

This does not prevent departmental and regional competitions from overcoming certain criteria by authorizing candidates under 1.70 meters or tattooed to participate. But they cannot claim the regional title. Last September, Alizée Bidault was able to take part in the election of Miss New Caledonia 2021 despite a size lower than the criteria requested by Miss France. "My height does not allow me to reach the first two places of this election, I was elected second runner-up and it is with great pride that I carry this title," said the young woman measuring 1.66 meters after the coronation of Oceane Le Goff.

For the next Miss Tahiti 2023 contest, Vaiterupe Mugnier (1.67 m), Heinarei Tama (1.67 m) and Matahii-Hoturau Taaviri will not be able to claim the crown. The latter, an 18-year-old student in BTS hotel and restaurant management, is only able to... 1.59 meters! As for tattoos, more tolerated by the Miss France organization, they are subject to appreciation according to their size and visibility. Heinarei Tama has one at the level of the right hip that goes down to the top of the thigh. The same goes for Poeiti Yule-Poroi's upper right arm.
