Tolls in Europe – Where drivers have to pay extra for tunnels and passes

2023-05-18T06:18:05.038Z

Highlights: In many European countries, there is a toll for the use of the motorway. But often tunnels and passes are not included in the fee. In Austria in particular, drivers have to be careful when planning their routes. Even in Germany, which is otherwise toll-free for motorists, there are tunnels that can only be used for a fee. Without a vignette, there's a risk of a high fine – up to 800 euros in Slovenia and up to 185 euros in the Czech Republic.

If you travel abroad, you often need a vignette. In many European countries, there is a toll for the use of the motorway. But this does not always really include all the routes on the route. For many tunnels and passes, motorists have to pay separately.

In Austria, many tunnels and passes cost extra – German motorists also have to pay

"Depending on the length of a tunnel, the fee range extends from 6 euros for the Austrian Bosruck tunnel (5509 meters) to 48 euros for the 11.6-kilometer Mont Blanc tunnel between France and Italy," explains the ADAC on its homepage.

In Austria in particular, drivers have to be careful when planning their routes. There are additional tolls for eight passes and tunnels. But even in Switzerland and Slovenia – where there is only one digital vignette – the use often costs extra. Even in Germany, which is otherwise toll-free for motorists, there are tunnels that can only be used for a fee.

Without a vignette, there is a risk of a high fine – up to 800 euros in Slovenia

"If you don't buy a vignette or don't attach it correctly to the windshield, you can expect drastic fines," the ADAC emphasizes. In Slovenia, the fine can be up to 800 euros. And also in Austria (from 120 euros), Switzerland (190 euros plus vignette costs) and the Czech Republic (from 185 euros) the missing sticker is punished dearly.
