Highlights: Kinderland daycare center in Holzkirchen to be extended. New building will have space for 160 children in seven groups. Construction has been delayed due to Ukraine war and shortage of skilled workers. The completion of the building is planned for the turn of the year 2024/25. The new building docks onto the existing building via a connecting corridor. After fire in the existing children's area, renovated rooms will definitely be able to be used again on September 1, says the project manager.

Holzkirchen creates space for childcare: In addition to the Kinderland daycare center in Erich-Kästner-Straße, another facility with seven groups is being built. The groundbreaking ceremony has been set.

Holzkirchen – With a courageous throw of sand from Mayor Christoph Schmid, his deputies and municipal council colleagues from the parliamentary groups, Sandra Kluger and Matthias Maschner from the Munich architectural firm Hirner & Riehl, Kinderland Managing Director Petra Götzenberger and her employees Eva-Maria Vogl and Jenny Kohn, it was official: Work on the extension of the Kinderland daycare center on Erich-Kästner-Straße in Holzkirchen can begin.

Mayor Schmid, weatherproof in a jacket and rain pants, reviewed the past four years since the planning for the house was commissioned on July 18, 2019, which is not only intended to cover current needs: "We want to get ahead of the situation with it," Schmid described with the expression commonly used in disaster control. It is not only a matter of remedying the current tense situation, but also of having room for further needs. He hopes that the new daycare center will create such an attractive workplace that it will not lead to the staff shortages that can be felt everywhere.

Completion planned for the turn of the year 2024/25

The completion of the building with space for 160 children in seven groups - one of them an after-school care group - is planned for the turn of the year 2024/25. About five years after the market town launched the project. At the end of 2021, the government of Upper Bavaria issued the funding decision. Because bids were not received for all trades, the award was paused, which delayed the start of construction (we reported). It was only with a new award that they had more success. They were not happy with all the offers, but accepted this in order not to delay the construction any further. The costs were most recently estimated at around eleven million euros.

Matthias Maschner explained increased costs and increased planning effort not only with the Ukraine war and a shortage of skilled workers, but also with changed regulations compared to the previous building, for which he was already responsible. "It was a compliment that we were asked to do it again as we did with the first building," said the architect and project manager. At first, he swallowed when he heard about a house for seven groups, but now he is confident that the right way has been found to make the new building as airy as the first. It docks onto the existing building via a connecting corridor, but is self-sufficient.

After fire: Renovated rooms "definitely" usable from September

With regard to timber construction, Marschner added that his office had been pointing out its advantages for daycare buildings for years. Holzkirchen was the first client to implement this construction method, which has proven itself in practice in all areas. Even the renovation is quite possible, as was shown after the fire in the existing children's area. Here, too, delays are due to the problem of not always finding craftsmen in a timely manner. Schmid added that the emergency roof over the construction site had been left in place in order to be able to work in its protection even in bad weather. On September 1, the renovated rooms will definitely be able to be used again.

Even earlier, the children can use what the teachers were allowed to receive after the official act: shovels, spades and the construction helmets used for the photo. From the sparkle in the eyes of the employees, one could guess how much joy it should bring to "their" children when they are allowed to unpack the boxes.
