Can the European Court of Human Rights push the France towards the legalisation of active assistance in dying? This is in any case the hope of the pro-euthanasia association Dignitas which raises the question of a right to die with dignity to the ECHR.

At the end of April, 30 French members or members residing in France of the association filed petitions before the body. Their argument? "The absence of legislation on active assistance in dying violates several provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights: the right to life (Article 2), the right to protection from inhuman and degrading treatment (Article 3), the right to personal autonomy (Article 8) and freedom of thought and conscience (Article 9)", explains to the office of Patrice Spinosi, their counsel. The Dignitas association considers suicide as "the ultimate freedom of the human being". As a first step in the procedure, the Strasbourg court registered the applications at the beginning of May.
