Now even more dangerous? Video Shows New Highway Mesh of Environmental Glue

2023-05-19T03:08:30.950Z

Highlights: Climate activists of the "Last Generation" blocked the A15 at Hohenzollerndamm in Berlin on Monday (100 May) with a new protest method. In a new version of their protest action, two of a total of six activists glued themselves to the car tire instead of the floor of the highway. The police were quickly on the scene and unceremoniously removed the car tires to which the protesters had glued themselves. The cars used for the protest action were then towed away.

Climate activists of the "Last Generation" have apparently developed a new method to stop traffic and thus draw attention to the progress of climate change.

Berlin - The climate activists of the "Last Generation" regularly organize high-profile protest actions that are welcomed by some and demonized by others. On Monday (15 May), blockades took place at 17 locations in Berlin. A video shared by the news site Focus Online now apparently shows a new method with which the so-called "climate glue" completely paralyzed traffic on a Berlin motorway.

Climate stickers paralyze traffic on motorway with new protest method in Berlin

Stopping the flow of traffic on a highway is not a safe undertaking. The climate activists of the "Last Generation" relied on rental cars – and glue – on the A100 on Hohenzollerndamm on Monday. In a video shared on Tuesday by Focus Online, a white van is first noticed on the three-lane highway near Berlin, which quickly changes from the right lane to the far left, cutting several cars.

In a coordinated action, another rental vehicle changes from the right to the middle lane, so that all three lanes are occupied by the cars of the climate activists at the same level. At this point, all three cars have switched on their hazard warning lights and then brake at the same time so that the cars behind them come to a standstill. The traffic is thus completely paralyzed.

Climate activists get out of the cars – and stick themselves to car tires

A few moments after all traffic had come to a standstill, climate activists in high-visibility vests got out of the rental cars – accompanied by an angry concert of horns from the cars waiting behind them. In a new version of their protest action, two of a total of six activists glued themselves to the car tire instead of the floor of the highway. To make it clear what they are fighting for, the four other protesters unfurled a banner and lined up across the entire width of the highway.

The video also shows the sometimes angry reactions of the motorists who came to a halt behind the protesters. "I have to go to school! What should I do? I have to get through here!" shouts a driver desperately, who had gotten out of his car to discuss directly with the protesters. In some cases, there were scuffles between motorists and demonstrators – not uncommon in protests of climate glue.

The police were quickly on the scene and unceremoniously removed the car tires to which the protesters had glued themselves. In this way, the climate adhesives could be removed quickly. The cars used for the protest action were then towed away. "At the Hohenzollerndamm driveway, people glued themselves to car tires. Solution: Tire change," the Berlin police said succinctly.

Blockades at 17 locations in Berlin - Climate stickers continue to rely on proven protest methods elsewhere

At further protests in Berlin on Monday, the activists continued to glue themselves to the roadway. According to their own statements, the demonstrators relied on a sand-glue mixture, which takes a particularly long time to remove the stuck hands from the asphalt. According to police, some of the officers had to use cut-off machines to remove the protesters from the ground. Accordingly, there was damage to the roadway, which first had to be repaired, as dpa reports. In more and more federal states, protesters have to pay for police operations themselves.

Among the demonstrators on Monday was the group's press spokeswoman, Carla Hinrichs, who was sentenced last week by the Frankfurt am Main District Court to two months in prison on probation for an earlier action. The verdict is not yet final, said a spokeswoman for the court on dpa request. If the Frankfurt verdict becomes final and Hinrichs is convicted again for the Berlin action, a violation of probation could be established. Then it could be that Hinrichs will have to start her prison sentence, it said.

The protest movement "Last Generation" has been demonstrating for more than a year for comprehensive climate measures by politicians and has since organized over 1,200 road blockades throughout Germany. It sees itself as the last generation before the tipping points – i.e. the threshold at which a cascading worsening of the climate crisis is set in motion should they ever be crossed. While the methods of climate glue are met with great rejection by people in Germany, there are apparently far-reaching overlaps with the population in terms of content. According to a recent survey, even the majority of people in Bavaria, which tends to be more conservative, want the government of Bavaria to do more to achieve its climate targets. 58.1 percent clearly or somewhat agreed with this statement, 38.2 percent rejected the statement.
