On the Street and in Five Blocks: How the City's Largest Mural Was Painted

2023-05-19T11:07:51.603Z

Highlights: The project "Abasto cultural neighborhood" is composed of works of art and the largest mural in the City. It is the "carpet of art", or painting on the ground, also called Universo Abasto. The work that stands out the most is on Guardia vieja, in the party wall of a hypermarket, in homage to a worker on public roads, Juana. The entire artistic ensemble had its inauguration two weeks ago in Guardia Vieja Street.

In the tour there are also artistic interventions on shops and buildings.

With a work of 500 meters in length, the Abasto area has the largest mural in the city. It is the "carpet of art", or painting on the ground, also called Universo Abasto, an intervention on the pavement of Agüero Street, between Guardia Vieja and Perón, where the Station Park is located.

"It is a kind of open-air gallery, a cultural corridor, a walk where the citizen is invaded by images that have to do with their own identity and invites you to visit it," describes the artist and filleter Silvia Dotta, who designed part of the works that are drawn on the street. It also refers to other works of art that began to become a reality last year and are exhibited in the neighborhood.

The integral project is called "Abasto cultural neighborhood" and belongs to the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires, together with the Ministry of Urban Development, the Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene, the Ministry of Transport and Works and Communes 3 and 5.

It began last year, with a corridor of five murals made by women artists, on Guardia Vieja and Agüero streets. The work that stands out the most is on Guardia vieja, in the party wall of a hypermarket, in homage to a worker on public roads, Juana. It is signed by Dotta and Mabel Vicentef.

On the dividing wall of a hypermarket, a work of art pays homage to Juana, a worker.

"The project was very well received at the time. Therefore, this year it was decided to continue with the mural on the pavement. The work begins at the door of the Abasto and continues to the Paseo de la Estación", explained the artist. Dotta, a founding member of the Fillet Association, was chosen to capture her art on the largest art carpet in the City.

The intervention also features illustrations by Camila Calderón. Therefore, for five blocks there are drawings that represent the imaginary of the symbolic world of Abasto, with figures of Carlos Gardel, others that refer to music and chess, among other motifs.

"The idea was that what spun these illustrations, of the characters of the Abasto, were the red porteño steaks. It's a red route, which at intersections becomes filleting," Detta said.

The execution of the entire work was directed by Magalí Torres, together with POGO Producciones and the coordination of JuanRa. And it was made thanks to the donation of Alba paintings.

The entire artistic ensemble had its inauguration two weeks ago on Guardia Vieja Street. "Art was celebrated, it was a very interesting project," described Dotta, who also celebrated the inclusion of Buenos Aires filleting to the cultural agenda.

The project "Abasto cultural neighborhood" is composed of works of art and the largest mural in the City.

"Agüero Street, as part of its history, was a parade of filleted trucks, side by side, parked waiting for the merchandise of the Abasto. Therefore, this is an opportunity to give the steak a place again in the urban landscape, since this is where it is born, on the street, and because it began in vehicles," he reflected.

The artist also added that Guardia Vieja "was a street that was totally dark, where there were gray walls. Now it's a burst of color, with images of our culture and with our identity," he said.

Guardia Vieja, in addition, became one of the green streets proposed by the Buenos Aires Government through the Ministry of Public Space.

Between Agüero and Gallo, the block that leaves the former Mercado de Abasto and offers the mural on the stop of a hypermarket, already shows the transformation to which it was subjected, with a green stonemason, wider sidewalks and level with the road, with restored paving and spaces for an Ecobici station.
