Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky landed in Hiroshima on Saturday ahead of his participation in the G7 summit. He is expected to urge the leaders of the world's most powerful democracies to further tighten sanctions on Moscow and help his country fight the war.
An EU official said at a press briefing that Ukraine's president would take part in two talks on Sunday. The first will be attended by members of the G7 forum and will focus on the war in Ukraine. The second, in which representatives of other countries will also participate, will deal with ways to create "peace and stability."
In addition, Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, said that during the conference Zelensky would meet US President Joe Biden. On Friday, Biden announced his support for training Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 fighter jets.
During the summit, the leaders are expected to address other global problems on the agenda, including climate change, artificial intelligence, nuclear proliferation and addressing poverty.
China, the world's second-strongest economy, is also troubling Western and Asian leaders over fears of its intentions to invade Taiwan, which could trigger a broader conflict. G7 leaders drafted a statement saying, "China continues to build its nuclear arsenal, without transparency or dialogue, and poses a threat to global and regional stability."
