Penzberg - 125 years ago, a gateway to the mountains opened for Penzberg: The railway line to Kochel was opened on 23 May 1898.

The railway celebrates its anniversary: On 23 May 1898, 125 years ago, the Penzberg-Bichl-Kochel line was opened. At the same time as the former Isar Valley Railway Munich-Bichl-Kochel. Rundschau reader Arthur Weiglmeier from Penzberg is taking this milestone birthday as an opportunity to look back on a piece of industrial history. The new railway line to Kochel connected to the line from Munich to Penzberg, which had already been opened on 16 October 1865.

Sensation with electricity

Completed in 1924, the storage power plant with its distinctive six 400-metre-long penstocks is considered the cradle of industrial power generation in Bavaria. Since 1983 it has been an industrial monument, but the Uniper plant still supplies electricity. Political debates are currently underway about the future of the power plant when Uniper's water concession expires in 2030. The father of the power plant had been Oskar von Miller. He wanted to supply Bavaria with electricity nationwide. In 1882, von Miller organized an electrical exhibition in Munich's Glaspalast – including the first transmission of electricity over a longer distance. Over 57 kilometers from Miesbach to Munich. Since 1952, a memorial stone in the Old Botanical Garden has commemorated this technical sensation. With the commissioning of Lake Walchen and other hydroelectric power plants, a "wheel-rail system with regenerative primary energy" was possible, explains Weiglmeier. Today's modern technology would also enable the braking energy of a train to be fed back into the performance network for the operation of further trains.

Penzberg train station turns 100

In Penzberg, a milestone birthday will be celebrated next year around the railway line: The "new" station will celebrate its 100th anniversary. When the railway line was extended to Kochel in 1898, the "Neupenzberg" station was initially built as a wooden barrack, according to the city archives. In 1924/25 the barracks were replaced by a representative new building. The first Penzberg station from 1865 was from then until the mine closure in 1966 only the freight yard of the plant. It was cancelled in 1977. The "new" station has belonged to the city for several years and has housed the Bürgerbahnhof as a social and cultural meeting place since 2022.
