The big band concert of the schools in the district convinced not only with a formidable selection of works, but also with musical performances at a very high level and a stunning playing mood.

Freising - The special thing: This year, the now legendary concert event took place for the 18th time - or as moderator Dr. Florian Kiefer from the Lions Club Freising put it: "Now we are finally grown up!"

The annual benefit concert has long since become a permanent fixture in Freising's cultural landscape, which is why one thing was not particularly surprising – namely that the big band event was once again completely sold out.

On Wednesday live on stage: The Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium (JoHo) under the direction of Marina Bögl, the Camerloher-Gymnasium under the direction of Gunther Fendler and the Dom-Gymnasium under the direction of Michael Schwarz. And how powerful, almost bombastic, three ensembles sound, they proved with the perfectly chosen joint opener "Puttin' On The Ritz" - in which the window panes vibrated right away. What followed was a wild journey through many epochs and artists' oeuvres, sometimes swinging, sometimes rocking, but always precise and with a lot of heart and soul in every single note.

In fact, the selection of works was extremely charming and also perfectly depicted what can be brought to the stage with a big band ensemble – such as the groovy "Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing" by Stevie Wonder, which immediately went into the heart and legs in the JoHo ensemble's version. It became more complex with "Artistry In Rhythm" by Stan Kenton, a jazz number from the 1940s, which was magically interpreted by the Camerloher Ensemble. The Camerlohers then bowed extremely magically to Glenn Miller with a little meddley, while the cathedral ensemble really let it rip - with "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John.

"Every year I'm just thrilled to see what a brilliant big band sound they bring to the stage," said Rupert Widmann, head of the main office, during the concert break. And even in the sponsor area behind the stage, the praise did not stop: "This is once again terrific," emphasized Lord Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher, while music school director Odilo Zapf was brief, but very concise: "Great!" The president of the Freising Lions Club, Dr. Joachim Schurig, was also very enthusiastic: "The benefit concert has long been part of Freising." By the way, the net proceeds of the concert will once again flow into various projects of children and youth work in the district of Freising.

However, there wasn't much time backstage for praise, because after a break of about 15 minutes it was already time for the second half of the concert – and it was a tough one. A treat: "Birdland", composer Josef Zawinul's wonderful homage to the famous jazz club and the even more famous Charlie, the Bird, Parker. Wonderfully dynamic and warm brought to the stage by the Dom Ensemble, while the Camerloher Big Band melted all hearts once again with "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by Sting and at the same time heralded the conclusion. The bang effect at the end: "Footloose", interpreted by all three bands, a rip-off to dance along, again massive and full of musical tinsel.

The summary is therefore a very simple one: The musical level of all three schools is enormous, and the joy of playing of the young ensemble members was very touching.

Thus, the big band concert of the schools in the district of Freising was again a glittering party. Of course, the applause was tremendous, and the audience was visibly inspired as they poured into the cool Freising night after about two hours of the best big band sound. Simply a wonderful concert – and one full of musical wonders.
