After summer days, storms move across some regions of Germany. On Sunday, heavy rain caused flooded roads and numerous operations.

Update from May 8, 7:55 a.m.: Heavy rain has caused flooded roads and landslides in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg. The fire brigade was deployed on Sunday and Monday night with hundreds of forces, it was said.

In the Verbandsgemeinde of Daaden-Herdorf in Rhineland-Palatinate, some streets and cellars were flooded by heavy rain on Sunday evening at around 19:00 p.m. Smaller landslides also caused some debris to end up on the roads. The German Red Cross looked after around 30 people in the community centre in Daaden, who had to be evacuated from their homes. No one was injured, according to the Technical Operations Command (TEL). According to the information, rail traffic between Daaden and Betzdorf was discontinued. Early Monday morning, the situation slowly eased again, a spokesman said. The people cared for in the community center were able to return to their homes.

In the Zollernalb district in Baden-Württemberg, storms had also caused chaos. Hundreds of firefighters were deployed. Due to heavy rain on Sunday afternoon in the town of Balingen, streams overflowed their banks and streets were flooded. Several families had not been able to leave their homes in Balingen because the water had washed around the buildings, the fire brigade said. They had fled to the upper floors, some of them had stayed there, some of them had been taken out of the buildings with ladders.

In other places in Rhineland-Palatinate, the heavy rain on Sunday had led to operations by the fire brigade. In Nentershausen and the surrounding area, an adjacent slope had been washed out at the junction of two country roads. The roadway was heavily polluted by mud and debris. In Großholbach - also in the Westerwald - a lightning strike had caused property damage to a conservatory. Around Kaiserslautern, some roads were hindered by fallen trees, as a police spokesman said on Monday morning. In Römerberg, according to police, some cellars were full.

Thunderstorms again in Germany: Where the DWD warns of "distinctive weather"

Update from 07 May, 14.15 p.m.: In some regions in the southwest of Germany, the first thunderstorms have already approached around noon. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported strong thunderstorms, especially in the Black Forest. The DWD also warns of "distinctive weather" for other regions in Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia between Aachen and Cologne. This is expected to spread further in western and southwestern Germany over the course of the day.

Severe weather in Germany: DWD expects further thunderstorms and heavy rain

Update from May 06th, 17:00 p.m.: The German Weather Service (DWD) is still expecting severe weather in the coming days. From Saturday afternoon, there will be strong thunderstorms on the edge of the Alps and squalls on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. In Hesse, too, there is a renewed threat of storms with heavy rain. In Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are possible.

Already on Friday, there were violent thunderstorms, especially in Bavaria. In some cases, hailstones with a diameter of between three and four centimeters fell from the sky and gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour swept across the Free State. According to police, a pile of wood burned in Mindelheim after a lightning strike. The fire brigade in Munich had to move out because of fallen trees, wet cellars and damaged cars. However, according to current knowledge, there was no major damage or injuries.

Severe weather in Germany leads to wintry road conditions

Update from May 6, 09:30 a.m.: In southern Baden, a storm on Friday afternoon led to wintry road conditions. Hail of grain sizes between about one and three centimeters in diameter pelted down for minutes, especially on the village of Teningen. According to the fire brigade, there was no significant damage. In Bavaria, too, there were thunderstorms with rain in many places. Experts had previously sounded the alarm. According to the DWD forecast, it could continue to be similarly uncomfortable in parts of Germany today, Saturday.

Severe weather alert in Germany: DWD forecasts thunderstorms and heavy rain again

Especially in the Alps and in the foothills, thunderstorms are to be expected again on Saturday afternoon, the weather experts predict. Locally, heavy rain of up to 25 litres per square metre is possible within a short period of time. In addition, there are:

  • Stormy gusts and 70km/h
  • Small-grained hail

"Local storm-like developments with heavy heavy rain around 30 l/sqm in a short time and larger hail are not excluded, but unlikely," writes the DWD. In the night to Sunday (7 May) the thunderstorms are expected to subside again. In the west, there will be isolated showers. Temperatures are between 8 and 15 degrees in the northeast and at the North Sea. In the rest of Germany, highs between 17 and 24 degrees are to be expected.

Weather forecast for Germany: The new week also starts with thunderstorms and heavy rain

The forecast for Sunday is similar. In the west and southwest, heavy showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain, small hail and stiff gusts would have to be expected. Already on Monday (8 May) there will be storms again. From the Baltic Sea to Saxony, it should remain sunny and dry. The rest of the prospects, however, sound anything but rosy. The DWD writes: "Otherwise cloudy, partly cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms, in the south and northwest in the course also stronger with heavy rain."

Severe weather alert in Germany: Thunderstorms, hail, storms – which regions are affected

First reported on May 5, 2023: Munich – At the weekend it will be stormy and wet in many regions of Germany. Several weather services such as wetter.net and the German Weather Service (DWD) predict gusts, rain and hail for the next few days. The thunderstorms could only be the prelude to an uncomfortable month. "May will fall into the water this year," predicts meteorologist Dominik Jung of wetter.net. "There is definitely no stable spring high in sight until after the middle of the month."

Thunderstorm warning at the weekend: Many regions in Germany affected by rain and hail

For the storms at the weekend, a low west from Ireland was responsible, informs the DWD in a current forecast. The low is expected to move from west to east in the course of Friday and can lead to the first short thunderstorms as early as noon. For the most part, however, the DWD expects rain showers for the time being. In the west and southwest, it is expected to thunderstorm increasingly from noon. Places on the Lower Rhine/Emsland are particularly affected, followed by southeastern Lower Saxony, Hesse, Thuringia and Franconia as far as Baden-Württemberg and the Alps.

"Small streams and rivers can lead directly to regional flooding," warns weather expert Jung of the risks in many regions on Friday. Residents near streams or rivers should be vigilant during violent thunderstorms or a lot of rain. "Roads can quickly flood and basements can fill up." The DWD also warns of heavy rain, hail with a diameter of up to two centimeters and gusts of up to about 80 km/h.

According to the DWD, there is a greater danger on Friday in the southwest, from the Black Forest to the edge of the Alps. There could also be larger hail, with a diameter of up to four centimeters, as well as severe squalls of around 100 kilometers per hour. Especially in the south, the strong thunderstorms could continue into the night, south of the Danube, for example, there is a risk of heavy rain. Under certain circumstances, large amounts of rain could come together on Friday and local flooding could threaten.

Weather in Germany: Strong thunderstorms are approaching – that's what experts expect

On Saturday (6 May), the severe weather situation will temporarily calm down, according to the two weather services. However, it remains cold and uncomfortable. On Sunday (7 May), rain showers from the west are expected to start again in the afternoon. In the afternoon there will be strong thunderstorms with rain and hail again. On the other hand, the DWD does not expect squalls on Sunday.

  • Friday (5 May): Thunderstorms with rain, hail and occasional squalls. Temperatures of ten to 15 degrees in the northeast, in the rest of Germany sometimes 16 to 24 degrees.
  • Saturday (6 May): Cloudy weather, scattered rain possible. Maximum temperatures mostly between 10 and 24 degrees.
  • Sunday (7 May): In the afternoon, thunderstorms with rain and hail will come up again. Highs of 16 to 23 degrees.

"The first major storm of 2023 is imminent in parts of Germany," meteorologist Dominik Jung continues in his weather forecast. Overall, according to Jung, it has been observed for years that the weather in Germany is becoming more and more extreme. Among other things, this also leads to heavier rainfall. The meteorologist justifies the increasingly extreme conditions as a consequence of climate change. (nz/dpa)
