City trip yes, horrendous prices no? A recent analysis shows which cities in Europe are the cheapest this year. It's not just Eastern European destinations that are in the lead.
Travel is expensive this year – above all, flight costs have increased for many airlines for most destinations. In order to save money, holidaymakers can look for destinations where comparatively little money is needed, at least locally. A postal company in the United Kingdom, Post Office Travel Money, has analysed which European cities are easy on the wallet: Surprisingly, it is not only destinations in Eastern Europe where a cheap stay is possible.
Portugal's capital is the cheapest European city break destination in 2023
Would you have thought it? Lisbon is the cheapest European city in 2023. Compared to the previous year, prices have risen by only two percent – a much lower figure than in other destinations. It is closely followed by the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, which is only 28 cents more expensive. Here the prices for accommodation are slightly higher. The third cheapest city in the group is Krakow, located in the south of Poland.

Unlike in previous years, some cities in Western Europe are among the top ranks of the cheapest destinations in 2023. In addition to the leader Lisbon, Athens has made it to 4th place (previously 1st place) and Porto to 6th place. Lille in France was also able to secure a position in the top 10. On the other hand, there are six Eastern European cities: Vilnius and Krakow are in the company of Riga, Zagreb, Budapest and Warsaw.

To find out which city break destinations are the cheapest, Post Office Travel Money looked at the average prices of twelve typical holiday expenses over a weekend. These include, for example, a 3-course meal for two people including house wine, a 48-hour ticket for local transport, the entrance fee to the top tourist attraction and the price of two nights in a 3-star hotel for two people.

They are popular, but they also come at a price: according to the analysis by Post Office Travel Money, Amsterdam and Venice are once again the most expensive cities in Europe for a weekend getaway this year. Hotel costs in particular have a strong impact here. Travelers have to dig almost as deep into their pockets for a trip to Paris, Barcelona, London, Rome, Edinburgh, Madrid, Dublin or Berlin.
