Highlights: One-year-old male wolf was euthanized by a veterinarian in Bautzen, Saxony. Wolf suffered from a massive skin disease caused by mange infestation. The animal had a deformation of the fractured left femoral neck and adhesions of the lumbar spine. German Farmers' Association is calling for the shooting of problem wolves in Bavaria. But sightings of the wild animals are not a cause for panic for the time being, says the Federal Ministry for the Environment.

For several months, a wolf has been roaming around in the district of Bautzen (Saxony). Now the sick wild animal has been euthanized.

Bautzen – For several months, a wolf roamed the surroundings of Kubschütz in the district of Bautzen (Saxony). Now the approximately one-year-old male was euthanized by a veterinarian, as the authorities announced on Friday (May 19). The reason: He was seriously ill.

The wolf suffered from a massive skin disease caused by mange infestation. The parasitic disease is caused by digging mites. In addition, the animal had a deformation of the fractured left femoral neck and adhesions of the lumbar spine. The veterinarian concluded the injuries as a result of a fracture. "All three diseases are serious and lead to permanent limitations of well-being with significant pain," it said.

Wolf euthanized in Saxony: Animal was behaviorally conspicuous

Actually, the young wolf should be scared away, as he was already behaviorally conspicuous before. The wolf was thus to be driven out of the region by disturbances. Since the beginning of the year, he had repeatedly caused a stir and uncertainty among the population, as he regularly visited several districts of the municipality of Kubschütz.

In addition, the animal had repeatedly used a straw camp as a sleeping place in the Baschütz district and sought shelter from winter weather. "In the district of Jenkwitz, the wolf could be observed several times in search of food on a compost or manure heap," it continued. On the night of Tuesday (16 May) to Wednesday (17 May), he was caught and then euthanized.

Encounter with the wolf: Direct encounter rather unlikely

A wolf was also recently spotted in the Kassel region. In the Unterammergau (district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen) there is also a wolf around, which had recently torn game in the immediate vicinity of a residential building. The German Farmers' Association is calling for the shooting of problem wolves in Bavaria. So are wolves becoming a danger to people in Germany?

Although it seems frightening, sightings of the wild animals are not a cause for panic for the time being. The animals are very shy towards humans and avoid direct encounters, informed the Federal Ministry for the Environment and Nature Conservation. "Most of the time, wolves avoid humans even before they have noticed them," it said. A direct encounter or even attacks by wolves on humans are therefore rare.

Encounter with the wolf: this is how you should behave

If you do encounter a wolf, keep calm and keep your distance. If the animal does not retreat, the ministry recommends speaking loudly or clapping your hands. In order not to trigger chasing behavior of the wild animal, one should not run away. "Treat them with respect. Do not try to get close to a wolf, and certainly not to attract it. Leave him room for retreat. Do not feed wolves under any circumstances and do not leave any leftovers."

Behavior in case of encounter:

  • stay calm
  • Don't run away
  • Shouting or clapping to draw attention to yourself
  • Be careful with young animals: they are curious and may dare to get closer to humans

Less mild was an encounter with a bear. A jogger was killed by a bear in Italy. However, the animal that has been captured and is to be euthanized is apparently innocent. Despite such horror reports, bear attacks – especially in Germany – are extremely rare.

Although the animals occasionally roam the Bavarian Alps, they are not sedentary in this country, reported the online portal, which belongs to WDR, Quarks. Here, too, the following applies to encounters: stay calm, stand still and do not run away. In the event of an attack, you should lie flat on your stomach, put your hands on the back of your neck and persevere. If it smells like Maggi in the forest, it indicates wild boars - there are also a few things to consider. (kas/dpa)
