Despite strong opposition from Economy Minister Nir Barkat: The Price Control Committee headed by the Ministry of Finance approved bread price increases starting tomorrow. That's an increase of 4.9 percent.
Following the price increase, the price of uniform sliced bread will be NIS 8.30 instead of NIS 6.77 today. The price of uniform bread will cost NIS 7.30 compared to NIS 5.95 today. The price of sliced white bread will be NIS 6.10 instead of NIS 5.21 a day.
Barkat refused to sign the order raising prices, and in response the large bakeries appealed to the High Court of Justice. Now, the committee headed by the Finance Ministry has independently decided to raise bread prices. This is despite the minister's objections.

In closed conversations, Barkat said, "Raising bread prices during such a difficult economic period is a cruel step. At a time when the prices of inputs and sea freight are only falling, raising prices for the weaker populations and harming the weakest members of society."
In July last year, the previous Economy Minister, Orna Barbivai, decided not to approve the Price Committee's recommendation to remove supervision of the price of bread, claiming that it would have raised its price immediately. Since then, the price of bread has remained under control and is now rising due to the increase in inputs.
