To the surprise of most pollsters and markets, incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan came out ahead in the first round of voting on May 14, nearly 5 points ahead of his main rival, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, while the parties in his coalition won 322 of the 600 seats in Parliament. The die seems cast for the second round on May 28, as anticipated by the Istanbul Stock Exchange and the Turkish lira, which have plunged into distrust of the continuation of "erdoganomic" policies. These brought the voices of the Anatolian heart to the president, but are expected to result in Turkey's deepening financial crisis.
