Highlights: Around ten million eligible voters are called upon to elect a new parliament on Sunday. The first results of the Greek elections are expected in the evening. The favorite in the parliamentary elections in Greece is the conservative ruling party New Democracy (ND) of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The opposition left-wing party Syriza, with former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as its top candidate, is likely to become the second strongest force. In Greece, around ten million eligible voters are called upon to elect a new parliament on Sunday. The first results of the Greek elections are expected in the evening.

Athens – In Greece's parliamentary elections on May 21, Greeks will decide which course their country should take. The approximately 9.8 million eligible voters can choose between 36 registered parties. Since 07:00 local time (06:00 CEST), people in Greece have been able to cast their votes. Polling stations close at 19:00 local time (18:00 CEST).

Parliamentary elections in Greece: First results in the evening

The first results of the parliamentary elections in Greece are expected in the early evening. Thus, the first forecasts are expected immediately after the end of voting. They are compiled on the basis of post-election surveys. After that, the meaningful projections will not be long in coming. They should be available around 20:00 p.m. (19 p.m. CEST).

Results of the parliamentary elections in Greece: Who is the favourite?

The favorite in the parliamentary elections in Greece is the conservative ruling party New Democracy (ND) of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Although the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was confronted with massive protests after the serious train accident in March that left 57 dead, ND is clearly the strongest force in the polls. Mitsotakis' party was last at about 35 percent.

The opposition left-wing party Syriza, with former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as its top candidate, is likely to become the second strongest force. In the latest polls, it was a good seven percentage points behind ND.

What would the results mean for the formation of a government?

Regardless of the results of the parliamentary elections in Greece, however, it is likely that no party will achieve a majority capable of governing in the distribution of the 300 parliamentary seats under the proportional representation system that is still in force. Instead, there will be exploratory talks for possible alliances. However, coalitions have little tradition in Greece.

If the formation of a government does not succeed within ten days of the election, new elections must be held. This could be the case in early July. Then a new electoral law would take effect, which would give the winner of the election additional seats. The first information on this will be available this evening, when the first reliable results will be available at around 19 p.m. CEST. (cs/dpa)
