Miguel Vega was under house arrest for the murder of Carlos Oscar Chequer in Tucumán. But he escaped when his conviction was upheld. The victim's family denounces police collusion and a sector of the Justice.

The family of baker businessman Carlos Oscar Chequer, murdered in 2019, denounced that his murderer – sentenced to life imprisonment – disappeared in the last hours after violating the house arrest he had. Their detention, they claim, had become extremely lax. "He does whatever he wanted," the family said.

This is the prosecutor Miguel Vega, who was sentenced to the maximum penalty for the homicide committed in the Tucuman town of Concepción, when he hit Chequer four times in the head, which caused him to lose brain mass. Vega also deleted evidence in the hours that followed, as recorded on a security camera.

"I think it's tremendous what's happening. It's like reliving homicide all over again. He has been living for four years, 100 meters from the police. Supposedly he had an electronic bracelet that did not work, because we know that he went out at night, he left at dawn, they picked him up. They had him like a king," María Inés Chequer, sister of the businessman, denounced to Los Primeros de Tucumán.

According to the family, Vega and his legal team had received last Monday a notification from the Supreme Court of Justice of the province, confirming that an appeal claim of the defense had been dismissed, which left the conviction firm. This measure would have triggered the leak.

Carlos Chequer, the defendant in the homicide case

The anger of the Chequers is based on the suspicion that the murderer would have had police help to escape, considering a series of irregularities in both the ankle brace and custody. The man was in a central area where he even continued to exercise his professional activity. "All his life he has had privileges," they charge.

According to La Gaceta de Tucumán, a 46-year-old lawyer suspected of collaborating in Vega's escape was arrested in the last few hours. They kidnapped a phone and a pickup truck.

A violent homicide and an unusual attempt to erase evidence

Carlos Oscar Chequer (62) was found dead on February 27, 2019 by two masons who worked in his home. The businessman was approached when he got out of his car, after entering the garage of his home in the Haimes neighborhood.

The body was lying and bloodied in the garage, next to a pickup truck. The victim had at leastfive blows to the head made with a piece of wood similar to a bat, according to the expert. These caused him to lose brain mass. Private camera footage located Vega in the area, with an object he was carrying in one of his hands before the killing.

After the crime, Vega even tried to make the evidence that was in the victim's truck disappear. He went into the fire station where she was kidnapped, broke the security strips, took items from inside and threw a knife into a nearby trash can.

All this sequence was recorded by the security cameras of a business in the area. After that intrusion he became a suspect and was arrested. The trial would later point to him as the material author of the crime.

For that reason he was detained from 2019 until the trial that finally convicted him. Today, with the final sentence, it is not known where it is.
