The Swiss ambassador to Tehran was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Sunday (May 21st) after the publication of a tweet condemning the execution of three men in connection with the autumn protests. Nadine Lozano was summoned "as a result of Switzerland's interventionist position in the internal affairs of our country," the ministry said in a statement. The ministry blames the embassy for "the unconventional and unprofessional act of republishing a photo with a false flag" of Iran.

The embassy had posted on Friday, May 19 on its Twitter account an image of people brandishing a portrait of Mahsa Amini, the young woman who died in September after being arrested for violating the dress code of the Islamic Republic, and an Iranian flag before the 1979 revolution, with a lion in its center.

«

We strongly condemn the executions" of the three men for their involvement in the deaths of members of the security forces during the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini and "we urge Iran to take measures to reduce the use of the death penalty," the message said in English and Persian.

During her summons, the ambassador was "informed of the level of dissatisfaction" of the Iranian authorities, and the fact that such an attitude was "not compatible with the friendly relations" between Iran and Switzerland, according to the statement. The Swiss embassy plays an important role since Switzerland has represented US interests in Iran since the severance of diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington in 1980.
