Lengenwies flood-proof: Flood protection project at Habichtgraben

2023-05-21T05:19:25.247Z

Highlights: Residents of Lengenwies should no longer have to fear a 100-year flood event. The municipality of Eurasburg had to pay almost 730,000 euros out of its own pocket to ensure the safety of residents. The bed width of the torrent was widened to 2.5 meters with a uniform profile. Existing footbridges and bridges have been partially replaced or adapted. The Isar Valley Railway Bridge, which existed at the time, had to be demolished. Now a new, narrower girder girder bridge for pedestrians and cyclists towers over the torrent.

Eurasburg - In the future, the citizens of the Lengenwies district will no longer have to fear a 100-year flood event. All the necessary work on the Habichtgraben has now been completed.

"You can always use a mayor like this for flood protection projects," said Korbinian Zanker, head of the Weilheim water management office, praising the good cooperation with Moritz Sappl, head of the Eurasian town hall, at the recent closing ceremony of the flood protection construction measures in Lengenwies.

Municipality of Eurasburg spends around 730,000 euros on flood protection at Habichtgraben

For the project, which cost around 2.7 million euros, the municipality of Eurasburg had to pay almost 730,000 euros out of its own pocket to ensure the safety of residents in the future.

After massive flood damage in 2009 and 2010, work has been underway since then on a solution to protect the villagers. "And the result is something to be proud of," said Zanker at the inauguration. He can still remember the first measures in 2012. "In order to improve the discharge conditions, the estuary of the Habichtgraben into the Loisach has been straightened." In addition, a wildwood and bedload retention system was built in front of the built-up area, Zanker looked back.

"Water always finds its way," Sappl philosophized. The local residents can tell you a thing or two about it. He is all the more reassured that with the recently completed optimisation work with regard to the shot channel running in the village, "the flood protection at the Habichtgraben has now been completed", commented Sappl.

The bed width of the torrent was widened to 2.5 meters with a uniform profile

The bed width of the torrent was widened to 2.5 meters with a uniform profile and expanded by a freeboard of half a meter. Existing footbridges and bridges have been partially replaced or adapted.

In terms of bridge technology, there were a number of challenges in order to meet the requirements of flood protection. The Isar Valley Railway Bridge, which existed at the time, had to be demolished. Now a new, narrower girder girder bridge in a steel construction for pedestrians and cyclists towers over the torrent.

Before inviting those present to the joint celebration in the Beuerberg Gasthof Zur Mühle, Sappl thanked the people of Lengwies for their patience in accepting the noise, dirt and dust during the construction work. He then handed over the words to Pastor Bernhard Häglsperger, who gave his blessing to the project.
