A fire destroyed the dormitory of a boarding school in Guyana early Monday, leaving at least 19 children dead and a dozen injured.
The fire originated at a high school in the city of Madhia, located more than 300 kilometers from Georgetown. The community, dedicated to gold and diamond mining, is mostly indigenous.
Originally, the death toll announced was 20 minors. According to National Security Adviser Gerlad Gouveia, doctors managed to save a patient who was dying.
Among the injured, at least two children remain in critical condition and four others have serious injuries. A dozen students are also under observation after being rescued.
