Highlights: The new station building in Zorneding will be built entirely of wood. It is heated with a heat pump, the electricity comes from a photovoltaic system on the roof. The innovative modular design is a model for further sustainable stations. Around 5700 daily passengers and disembarkers will be able to use the building from autumn. The total construction costs of around two million euros will be borne by the railway, the Free State of Bavaria, the federal government and the municipality of Zorneded.

Zorneding – "In view of this density of celebrities, Zorneding is now the navel of the world," joked Zorneding's mayor Piet Mayr on Monday, "but this is also a historic moment: After 15 years, we finally have a building in the village that deserves to be called a train station."

And what a building: According to Deutsche Bahn representative Klaus-Dieter Josel, the building whose topping-out ceremony has now been celebrated is the first of its kind in the whole of Germany, a reception building with exemplary character, especially in terms of climate protection. It was built entirely of wood, it is heated with a heat pump, the electricity comes from a photovoltaic system on the roof.

Battery stores solar power

A modern battery makes it possible to store the solar power that is used for the building during the day and flows into the operation of the traffic station at night. The total construction costs of around two million euros will be borne by the railway, the Free State of Bavaria, the federal government and the municipality of Zorneding. In addition to the solar system, the latter also finances a barrier-free toilet for the S-Bahn passengers, because the railway itself had only provided toilets for its own employees.

"Around 5700 daily passengers and disembarkers will be able to use the building from autumn," said Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU). He emphasized that the accessibility of the stations is very important to the Free State, but at the moment only the status quo can be maintained. With a view to Andreas Lenz (CSU), a member of the Bundestag from Frauenneuhartingen, he said: "We need more funds from the federal government for the expansion of the railway infrastructure, we still have to make significant progress." Because even in Zorneding there is still no elevator to reach the platform.

Mayor: "We can already be proud"

In addition to Lenz and Bernreiter, numerous other local politicians were on site to attend the topping-out speech by carpenter Max Semmler. In his timber construction company in Hemau, the building construction was prefabricated and then assembled on site in just a few weeks. "This is trend-setting architecture that we can already be proud of," enthused Mayor Mayr, who recalled in his welcoming address that the station had degenerated from a historical gem in recent years – the old station building had first fallen into disrepair and was finally demolished in 2008 – to an eyesore. That is finally history. In the coming months, work will be carried out on the interior fittings.

Starting in the fall, travelers will be able to buy not only tickets but also snacks in the building. The municipality of Zorneding then wants to redesign the station forecourt so that outdoor catering in front of the building is also possible. The municipality also wants to provide new, urgently needed bicycle racks.

Idea based on green railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt

According to Deutsche Bahn, the pilot project in Zorneding is based on the idea of green stations in Horrem (North Rhine-Westphalia) and Lutherstadt Wittenberg (Saxony-Anhalt). These stations are built in a climate-friendly way and are also powered by renewable energies.
