Henri Leroy, senator of Alpes-Maritimes, wants to understand why the National Education and investigators did not take precautions to protect Samuel Paty, despite the existence of threats.

The LR senator of the Alpes Maritimes Henri Leroy asked the president of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, the creation of a commission of inquiry into the assassination of Samuel Paty. "I therefore ask that a parliamentary commission of inquiry be able to conduct a thorough investigation and shed light on the responsibilities of each, understand the flaws in the system and provide concrete solutions to prevent such acts in the future," he wrote. "How can the National Education justify not having sidelined Samuel Paty the fortnight before his assassination? How did the investigators, and in particular the DGSI, not take the elementary precaution of protecting him?" he asked Le Figaro.

The senator, who relies on some revelations of Stéphane Simon's book, The Last Days of Samuel Paty, first sent a letter to Gérard Larcher and the president of the Senate Law Commission, François-Noël Buffet. "There are grey areas that a parliamentary inquiry needs to clarify. It would also make it possible to propose protective measures for people threatened with death," he said. Stéphane Simon revealed in particular that the online profile of the killer had been reported to the government platform Pharos, that some of Samuel Paty's colleagues turned their backs on him, knowing that he was threatened, and denounced the lack of speed of French intelligence.

We are not going to judge the case. We want to understand how Samuel Paty could find himself without assistance, and formulate proposals, "insists Henri Leroy who recalls that the teacher returned home with "a hammer in his bag, because he understood that he risked being attacked".

Samuel Paty was beheaded by a Chechen, who had refugee status, after his name was floated on social media. One student, who was not present that day, accused him of showing caricatures of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. The killer had offered 300 to 350 euros to college students to designate Samuel Paty. The assassin was then shot dead by the police. On 16 May, anti-terrorist investigating judges confirmed the decision to put 14 people, including 5 minors, on trial. Samuel Paty's family filed a complaint against two ministries, the Interior and National Education, for "failure to assist a person in danger" and "failure to prevent crime".
