Highlights: The Asian tiger mosquito is an aggressive mosquito and is on the rise in Germany. This is dangerous because it can transmit trophic diseases. The tiger mosquito got its name from its striped pattern in black and white. It bites mosquitoes during the day, while the native mosquitoes are mainly active at night. It is considered a potential vector of more than 20 viruses, including the following: West Nile virus, Dengue virus, Chikungunya virus and Zika virus. The risk of infection from a tiger mosquito bite is still low in Munich.

Munich – It comes from Asia, but due to the ever-warmer temperatures, it now also feels at home in this country: the Asian tiger mosquito. However, it is much more stinging than the native mosquitoes and its appearance also distinguishes it. The tiger mosquito got its name from its striped pattern in black and white. In addition, the tiger mosquito also bites mosquitoes during the day, while the native mosquitoes are mainly active at night. But above all, another difference makes the insect much more dangerous.

Tiger mosquito in Germany – vector of more than 20 exotic diseases

As reported by the Federal Environment Agency, the tiger mosquito was first spotted in Germany between 2007 and 2013. In the meantime, however, there are large populations in this country, especially in the summer months. However, the danger of the tiger mosquito does not only come from its temperament, it is dangerous above all that it can transmit exotic diseases. The Asian tiger mosquito is considered a potential vector of more than 20 viruses, including the following:

  • West Nile virus
  • Dengue virus
  • Chikungunya virus
  • Zika virus

This is why the tiger mosquito is dangerous: Increasing populations could transmit diseases in the future

"The risk of infection from a tiger mosquito bite is still low in Munich. However, it is conceivable that stable tiger mosquito populations will form, which can also be disease vectors," said Beatrix Zurek, health officer of the city of Munich. Climate change is also leading to an increased risk of tropical diseases in Europe.

In order to contain the further spread of the tiger mosquito, some areas are monitored. The city of Munich, for example, says it has a specialist company set up traps at eight locations in the city where the tiger mosquito could find good living conditions. These include kindergartens, cemeteries and railway sites.

Exotic tiger mosquito in Germany – it doesn't just bite in summer

However, the exotic mosquitoes do not only bite in summer - in the meantime, the tiger mosquito also reproduces in winter in parts of Europe. In Germany, too, a wintering population in winter has already been detected, as Jürgen Tölk from the Office for the Environment, Order and Consumer Protection explains. The tiger mosquito would have spread there in several allotment gardens over an area of about 100 hectares.

To keep the tiger mosquito away, potential breeding grounds should be avoided. These are often even found in the household, for example in watering cans and coasters of flower pots. In order to drive the tiger mosquito out of the garden, garden owners should also cover their rain barrels. (Kiba/dpa)
