The trial of the alleged assassin of a 34-year-old woman, killed at the wheel of her car in Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis) in September 2016, against the backdrop of a war between two rival gangs in eastern Paris, opened Monday before the Paris Assize Court.

Balding skull and short salt and pepper beard, black jacket with short sleeves on white jersey, Hanine Benbouabdellah, known as "Poub" or "Poup", 44 years old, a "caïd" of the sensitive district of Amandiers in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, is accused of the murder of Essma Cheambi, a mother, without criminal record, sister of Yassine Cheambi, a criminal known for drug trafficking, in custody at the time of the crime.

An assassination against a background of revenge

Released from prison in March 2016 and under judicial supervision pending a trial for murder, committed in October 2008, scheduled for October 2016, Hanine Benbouabdellah is suspected of having coldly executed several shots Essma Cheambi. The killer, riding a scooter, had fired several times with a 7.65 caliber pistol at the young woman stopped in her car at a red light. The DNA of Hanine Benbouabdellah was recovered from one of the six shell casings found at the crime scene but the man of Algerian origin denies being involved in the murder of the young woman. The Benbouabdellah and the Cheambi formed two rival bands in the Almond district. For the prosecution, the murder of Essma Cheambi, mother of a 16-month-old girl, would be due to a settling of scores between these rival gangs against a background of revenge.

At the time of the facts, the victim's brother, Yassine Cheambi, 48, nicknamed "Ziente" or "Yass the Banana" (name given to the Almond tree district because of the curved shape of one of the buildings of the city, editor's note) had been indicted for the murder, in 2013, of Zoheir Benbouabdella, the elder brother of Hanine Benbouabdellah. Tunisian-born Yassine Cheambi, who has always denied involvement in the murder of Hanine Benbouabdellah's older brother, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for this crime in March 2018 before being acquitted on appeal in February 2020. His lawyer at the time was Eric Dupond-Moretti. Yassine Cheambi was simply sentenced to 8 years in prison for criminal association.
