The week-long truce between the military and paramilitaries at war for power in Sudan officially came into effect on Monday, after more than five weeks of war, a thousand dead and more than a million displaced and refugees.
It was not immediately clear whether the ceasefire that was supposed to allow the passage of civilians and humanitarian aid was actually being implemented on the ground because the fighting, mainly in Khartoum and Darfur (west), usually weakens at night. And all day, the UN reported "fighting and troop movements."
Air raids on Khartoum
Residents of Khartoum's northeastern suburbs reported fighting to AFP on Monday night, after the truce between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane's army and paramilitaries of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) officially came into effect.
Air raids and explosions struck Khartoum again hours before a week-long ceasefire went into effect. For the 37th consecutive day, the five million inhabitants of the Sudanese capital are in the midst of the fighting, in sweltering heat, most of them without water, electricity and telecommunications.
