Elton's appearance at this year's ESC is causing a stir on the net. Only a few seem to have understood his joke to ESC presenter Hannah Waddingham.
Munich/Liverpool – Elton had an important task at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023: In front of an audience of millions, the presenter was allowed to present the German jury points live. The way he did this is causing amusement on the net – some even call the appearance embarrassing.

Elton at ESC 2023: "Do they want a German cookie?"
Many may know the 52-year-old from his time as a "show intern" with Stefan Raab. There he regularly took on small show interludes in the formats "TV total" and "Schlag den Raab". In the meantime, Elton, about whom only a few private details are known, is also one of the first ranks of TV presenters in Germany. This gave him the honor of taking over the ESC job from Barbara Schöneberger after seven years – not a good choice, according to some Twitter users.
"Elton just unerringly embarrassed," said one user on Twitter. "More embarrassing than 0 points," added another. The reason for the scathing criticism was probably Elton's greeting of the ESC final hosts: "Moin moin from Hamburch," the entertainer was heard grinning into the camera when he was switched to Liverpool. Then he pulled out a small box and held out a cookie to the camera: "Do you want a German cookie?" Elton asked the presenters of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, before quickly putting the box away and laughing and proceeding to the scoring.

"Who wrote this script for Elton? What was that?" asked a shocked Twitter user. However, the self-proclaimed ESC critics do not seem to be aware that Elton's appearance was not just a self-made gag, but an allusion to the well-known comedy series "Ted Lasso" on Apple TV. "I'm very sure that all the users who found Elton embarrassed have never seen Ted Lasso," one user commented.

The series is about the fictional football coach Ted Lasso, who coaches a professional team after a surprise promotion. In the first season, Ted brings a packet of cookies to his boss Rebecca every day – a central element of the plot that is meant to show how eager the coach is to be liked in his new job. Rebecca is played by British actress Hannah Waddingham. The same one who hosted this year's ESC and to whom Elton's little joke was addressed.

Fans of the series were delighted with the built-in allusion. "I guess you don't know Ted Lasso. Found the interlude very sympathetic and funny," commented a Twitter user on one of the scathing posts on the net. Many others join: "It's mean how everyone here is beating up poor Elton because they didn't get his very cute Ted Lasso insider," a Twitter user defends the German presenter. Waddingham himself also immediately understood Elton's allusion and laughed out loud when Elton offered her the butter biscuit.

But it wasn't just Elton's cookie joke that caused a stir, his English skills and his choice of clothes also attracted some people on social media. "The joke was nice, but Elton was the only one who didn't even get proper English right. The stammering was actually the embarrassing thing," says one user. Some people can't accept that the comedian was only wearing a T-shirt under his jacket: "Doesn't Elton have a shirt?" or "Everywhere the sharpest scoring players, and Germany: Elton."
Elton himself has not yet commented on the media excitement. In his Instagram story, he posted only a photo of his breakfast the morning after the ESC 2023: A grain and a cheese roll with the words: "Now breakfast... after a night with a lot of thoughts in your head". Whether the thoughts revolved around his controversial appearance or the bitter ESC defeat of the German band Lord Of The Lost, the entertainer did not reveal. (tt)
