A teenager dies in Mexico "after being attacked with an explosive object" outside a school

A 17-year-old girl died in Mexico's capital Monday after a firecracker exploded in her face that authorities are investigating was intentionally thrown, authorities said.

The young woman identified only by her first name, Jimena, was in front of the Colegio Barchilleres Plantel 2 school in Mexico City when what authorities described as an assault occurred.

The Attorney General's Office of the capital said on Twitter that it had initiated "an investigation of the events that occurred in the Nueva Industrial Vallejo neighborhood, GAM mayor's office, in which a teenager lost her life when she was attacked with an explosive object."

The area was cordoned off after the incident and the Attorney General's Office also said it had launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the death.

Members of the Rescue and Medical Emergencies Squad (ERUM) of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City assisted the young woman after the incident and said she suffered burns.

The SCC pointed out that "the analysis of the video surveillance cameras is already carried out for the identification of the probable person responsible for launching the explosive object."

The entity said that "according to the first reports, a subject who was in the vicinity of the Polytechnic Station of the Metro, threw a firecracker, with which, possibly the minor was injured."

The authorities had not, so far, made any arrests in connection with the young woman's death.

In the month of April alone, the Attorney General's Office reported 19,682 crimes in Mexico City, for a daily average of 634.9. Of the total, 967 were classified as "crimes against life and bodily integrity".
