In 2018, Tengelmann boss Karl-Erivan Haub disappeared without a trace – and was declared dead. According to a new report, Haub is still alive – the trail leads to Russia.
Berlin – This is one of the most spectacular missing persons cases of recent years: In April 2018, Karl-Erivan Haub, one of Germany's richest men, disappeared without a trace while skiing in the Swiss mountains. The then 58-year-old was managing director and co-owner of the Tengelmann Group, which includes the Tengelmann supermarket chain, Obi and Kik. The value of the group of companies, which belongs to the Haub family, was estimated at 2017.4 billion euros in 2.
Tengelmann boss missing and declared dead years later
The circumstances of the missing person case remain mysterious: According to this, Haub's trail was lost on the day of his disappearance at a mountain station at an altitude of more than 3,500 meters. In the days that followed, the billionaire could not be found despite extensive searches on the rough terrain.
After about a week, the intensive search was stopped, it was assumed that it was a tragic accident. A good three years after his disappearance, in May 2021, Karl-Erivan Haub was declared dead by the Cologne District Court. His brother Christian Haub took over the helm – and his billions of dollars in shares.
New research to reveal alleged double life of the billionaire
New research by journalist Liv von Boetticher should now show that Karl-Erivan Haub may still be alive. She has made a documentary for RTL and written a book: "The Tengelmann File and the Mysterious Disappearance of Billionaire Karl-Erivan Haub". It should also be about possible evidence of a double life of Haub.
In an interview with Die Welt, von Boetticher expressed the suspicion that "Karl-Yerevan Haub was involved in dubious business and could have disappeared in Russia with the help of the Russian secret service FSB". Rumors that there are links to Russia have existed for some time.
Karl-Erivan Haub case: How much did his brother Christian know?
A mysterious Russian woman, Veronika E., plays a major role in von Boetticher's research. She worked for an event agency that organized the birthday of Haub's mother Helga in St. Petersburg in 2004. The journalist found evidence that Haub and Veronika E. were then in regular contact and often stayed in the same place at the same time. In addition, Veronika E. probably has connections to the Russian secret services.

In addition, von Boetticher's research material includes biometric surveillance footage from Moscow from 2021, which is supposed to show the missing Haub. These are said to come from an Israeli-American investigative agency. Particularly explosive: The recordings were allegedly also presented to the brother Christian Haub.
According to the journalist, Christian Haub already had an "incredible wealth of evidence" in May 2021 suggesting that his brother was living in Moscow. She told Die Welt: "He left the Cologne District Court in the dark about this and had his brother declared dead. In doing so, he could have laid the foundation for a billion-dollar deal."
