From catwalks to social media, super-shiny hair is everywhere (in stark contrast to the carefree styles of lockdown days). But if we google what is the best way to achieve a glowing mane, the instructions are clear and always the same: simply change your shampoo, treat your hair and scalp with a moisturizing mask, stop straightening (and drying with a dryer), cut (even half a centimeter) every two months and use styling products (as many as you can).
Realistically, though, we know that those 'healthy hair' rules aren't always easy to stick to. The solution lies in some smart quick solutions that, moreover, are surprisingly reasonably priced.
How to get a shiny mane
1. Lamellar treatments. Kérastarse's K Water (salon exclusive) was the first, but today there are new releases to make at home. Essentially, these liquid conditioners work like a surface brightener, gliding over the outer core of each strand to instantly moisturize and repair any dry or damaged areas. They are best applied in the shower and require as little as 10 seconds to do their best work.
2. Gloss serums. A good serum is still one of the quickest and easiest ways to get shiny hair in seconds. Most are based on silicones (which get a bad rap in 'clean' beauty circles, but the fear is largely unjustified). Silicones are a safe and extremely common cosmetic ingredient that, in hair serums, provide a noticeable shine and protect the strands from frizz.
3. Oil aerosols. If your hair is especially dry or damaged, an oil mist is the best way to add an aesthetic shine while also nourishing dry areas. And they are particularly good after a straightening session.
